But Do You Get to Carry a Whip?

Today's story about Oakland having trouble recruiting cops brings to mind a story that ran in last Sunday's Chron about the SFPD having trouble recruiting cops. How desperate are they? They set up a recruitment booths at the Folsom Street Fair.

The photo above is of them, ah, trying to recruit a new member.

Now while we definitely agree that we need more cops and applaud the police for being so open minded as to trying to find police candidates at the Folsom Street Fair, we wonder if this is really such a good idea. After all, how many times in the future could this conversation occur and is this the kind of conversation you want to have happen with the police? "oh sure, officer, I'll...hey, don't I know you from somewhere? Weren't you...yeah, I know, weren't you that guy in the buttless leather chaps and gag-ball being lead around by that six foot tall drag queen on a leash?"

Not that there's anything wrong with it, of course.

The Folsom Fair seems like a *great* place to recruit more cops. All those buff daddies will surely pass the physical, they look intimidating as hell in uniform, and they already have their own handcuffs.

How is this not great for everyone?

And as for cops being recognized as leathermen, well isn't that just more community outreach?
