We Read The Weeklies

cover-0638.jpgNo winner last week, so we're going in random order. First up: the SJ Metro. Gary Singh had a crazy South Bay weekend. Is Palo Alto really as crime-ridden as they say? Cover article: The South Bay Best Of. Wow, this font is hard to read. It's broken down by city, with a readers' choice section. We didn't win their Best Blog award, which is only fair since we almost never talk about the South Bay. Also, scantily clad women throughout the pages. Barbecue in Santa Clara. More Twilight Zone love. Hey, we heard Metro music writer Todd Inoue is leaving -- we'll miss you, Todd! Where will we find out about quirky South Bay rappers now? Also, Cirque du Soleil is playing the HP Pavilion.

Next up, the SF Weekly. Eliza Strickland scores a twofer, with her article about population undercounting in the city and a killer piece about community tensions on Haight Street. Even the street kids are NIMBYs! (It was a very nice touch with the spare-changer complaining about how the Opera in the Park was an invasion of his space.) Moving on to the features -- why is the SF Weekly reprinting J. Hoberman's article from the Village Voice? Can't we get someone out here to watch fancy-pants films for us? Meredith likes everything except the food at Bong Su. SFist Ced likes everything about the review except for Meredith's French. A food insert that we accidentally left at Taqueria Cancun, where we were reading the Weekly today. A bar called Slide. Savage Love is angry about this guy who outed a bunch of BDSM people, and SFist Eve's horoscope encourages her to play fun board games (and D&D).

The Guardian and the East Bay Express, after the jump, along with the Weekly of the Week!

The Bay Guardian: Tim Redmond reminisces about crazy supervisor candidates he's seen in the past. Bevan Dufty's Drunk N Horny -- and all wet on Halloween! (Steven T. Jones again had nothing to do with the editing of that article. We love that disclaimer. We're going to use it on all our posts in the future!) Vandals destroying a mural in the Lower Haight, and chain stores are taking over. Apropos of nothing, we'd like to say that all news stories should be illustrated with a picture of Pakwan. We love you, Pakwan! Branding on Second Life. Cover article: Parties! Late night parties in SF, warehouse concerts in Oakland, and early 90s sex parties with Marke B. PartyParty, your thoughts? We toss the Rasputin Manifesto (sorry, Rasputin). Gougères! Look, SF Weekly, the Guardian's got a local film writer watching arty movies! And the sex writer on incest thoughts.

And the East Bay Express: Cover: What happens to all that fruit at the Berkeley Bowl? Problems with secondhand smoke laws. Trendy Le Bistro Elephant in Berkeley. Sweet emo 21 year olds in Street to Nowhere, a band from Oakland that's just signed to a major label. And entrepeneurial indie hip-hoppers exemplify dirt-hustling.

Weekly of the Week: It's a very close toss-up between the SF Weekly and the Guardian this week -- very close! We'll go with the Guardian for best overall quality -- but the Eliza Strickland pieces get the best individual articles award. (can one give a best individual award for two articles? Well, we'll contemplate that philosophical issue.) Also -- we'd highly recommend reading your weeklies at Cancun. Good times, plus -- everyone else is doing it too! We've never seen so many people all reading the Guardian before!
