Support Local Architecture

MerryGoRound.jpgWe were originally going to put a cursory summary of Partners in Preservation's program in Day Around The Bay, but after poking around on the website, it's so cool that we've elevated it to a stand-alone post. American Express, in connection with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the World Monuments Fund, will give $1 million to historic sites around the Bay Area. The way they'll determine who to give the money to and how to divide it up is by online voting.

murphy-windmill-postcard.jpgYou can pick from 25 sites, which include perennial favorites like the Roxie and the Fox Theater in Oakland, but also some gems you may not have thought of, like the neon signs in the Tenderloin (which got our vote today); the Tilden Park carousel; the building that housed the first federally funded day care program, for Rosie the Riveter women during WWII; a Japanese garden in Saratoga; and other architectural landmarks we had absolutely no idea existed around the Bay Area.

Once you register, you can vote once a day for your favorite landmark until Oct. 31 (and you can vote at kiosks at your local Peet's Coffees as well). The current standings: The Roxie, Angel Island's immigration station, the Haas-Lilienthal House, the Lyford House in Marin, and a rolling San Francisco streetcar.

Pictures of the Tilden carousel and the Murphy windmill, both entrants in the contest.

Please vote for the Bandshell in Golden Gate Park!

The Spreckles Temple of Music (the "Bandshell") in the Music Concourse of Golden Gate Park has hosted live music and performances on the weekends for 106 years! But now the bandshell is closed off because it needs repairs...

Please vote for the Bandshell and bring back live music and performances to Golden Gate Park!
