Dear Mr Ford
SFist Reader Michael has had it! And we're sure he's not the first person who has had it with the Series of Unfortunate Events (way to take ownership of your screwups, Muni!) we call a transit system.
Dear Mr. Ford,Tonight I have joined the increasing ranks of former MUNI riders after an incident at the Caltrain station.
I arrived to 4th & King St. on Caltrain #191. The train was slightly late, arriving about 9:41 pm. This meant that I could not make the N Shuttle which departs at 9:41 pm.
Several of us were waiting at the stop, expecting an N Shuttle at 9:56 pm, but no bus came. We watched 15's, 30's and 45's arrive and depart. I usually opt for the direct N Shuttle to avoid a transfer on Market Street at night, which can be a little creepy at times.
Will Michael make it home, or is he still waiting at the Caltrain station as we write this? Find out after ther jump!
Finally, about 10:04 a bus marked N Judah pulled in and its passengers exited. The male driver backed the bus into the Northern bay, near the Subway shop at the Caltrain Depot. At about 10:08, a second bus pulled in to allow its passengers to exit. The female driver parked the coach near the yellow stop marked METRO SHUTTLE, but the driver waved her hand at us when we approached the bus to board. She said the other driver was leaving first.
At about 10:15, the male driver came towards his bus but told us he was leaving at 10:26. The other driver should be leaving first.
At about 10:18, the female driver came out and argued a bit with the male driver. She then proceeded to get in her bus, turn on the engine and lights and pull away WITHOUT allowing any passengers to board.
I asked the male driver what happened here and he told me to get her bus number and "WRITE HER UP". Frankly, in the dark there was little chance to catch the coach number as it was speeding away. I also do not have the time nor the desire to play MUNI operator quality control person.
At this point, I took a taxi, which cost me $12. I simply could not wait any longer to get home. I arrived home at 10:40 pm. The net result is that it took an hour to travel 3.25 miles, after the initial 1 hour and 11 minutes to cover the distance from Mountain View to San Francisco.
This incident comes after the August derailment which made me 90 minutes late to work due to missed connections at Caltrain, I have finally reached the end of my patience.
While I certainly want to do my part to help reduce congestion and improve air quality, I find these constant issues to be completely unacceptable uses of my time. I respectfully submit a bill for the $12 cab fare and I enclose my September MUNI pass, as I will no longer require your organization's services.
Sincerely,
A 10-year MUNI rider throwing in the towel
How about you? Any Muni agony or (less likely) joy to report? Drop us a line!
