What's the Score, Boys? What Did Bugs Bunny Do? What's With the Carrot League Baseball Today?
First, a story...
We turned on the Giants game just to watch the bottom fall out and the Rockies take an 8-1 lead. Okay, we thought, this game is over. We can worry about other things. And so we turned off the game.
Hours later we go to write this, check out SFGiants.com to get the final score, and see THAT THE SCORE WAS 9-8 ROCKIES AND THE GIANTS HAD JUST SCORED A RUN IN THE BOTTOM OF THE NINTH WITH RUNNERS ON AND ONE OUT!!!!!! So we turned on the game just in time to watch Todd Greene just miss a home run with a foul ball, Jason Ellison just miss getting picked off second, and then Todd Greene just miss hitting a triple as Brad Hawpe made an over the shoulder catch deep in right-center. We then watched Eliezer Alfonzo hit a grounder to third to end the game.
Even though we only watched a tiny bit of the game, even though we didn't commit to the game like a whole bunch of other people did, we stil hate this game. And we still hate the Giants too.
Oh, and friggin Barry Bonds hit a line drive double that got stuck in the fencing in right field. He also hit # 732.
A's 1 Twins 0- For the A's, the big news is Dan Haren pitching a shutout, especially in light of the A's losing the first two games of the series and having to suffer through their first three-game losing streak since July. But the bigger story isn't about the A's but about the Twins' pitcher, Nelson Liriano. Liriano was 12-3 with a 2.19 ERA for the first part of the season and was looking like the big rookie story. Then he ran into arm trouble and got shut down for awhile in hopes his arm would get better. It didn't. Liriano heard something snap in the third inning and had to leave the game. Afterwards, he went to get an MRI and had to hear mention of one of the most dreaded phases in sports-- Tommy John Surgery. Somewhere out there, somebody in the Giants front office is secretly happy.
And Freddy Garcia of the Sox du Blanc threw a perfect game for 7 2/3 innings and shut down the Angels. The lead is now back to 5 1/2, the magic number 12.
