What's the Score, Boys? What Did Bugs Bunny Do? What's With the Carrot League Baseball Today?

But first....college!

These are not good days for the Stanford University Cardinal. In an upset with all sorts of subtext, the Cardinal lost to San Jose State University, 35-34 as SJSU came from 20 points behind. This is a huge victory in the same way it was a huge victory when all the slobs beat the snobs in those early 80's teen comedies. Stanford turned the ball over three teams in the second half-- one of them being an interception in the end zone-- and were completely unable to stop a rampaging Spartan running game. With two minutes left in the game, Stanford drove down the length of the field only to have Spartan defender Rakine Toomes knock the ball from WR Evan Moore's hands. SJSU is now 1-1 and Stanford is 0-2.

Cal, meanwhile, bounced back from their Not Ready For Prime Time shellacking at the hands of the Vols to defeat the Gophers, 42-17. Which makes sense because Volunteers are totally more intimidating than Gophers. The hero of the day was the awesomely named Nate Longshore who completed 22 of 31 passes for 300 yards and four touchdowns against Minnesota.

Now to baseball where the SF Giants beat the Padres in 11 innings, 5-4. Ray Durham scored the winning run after hitting a one-out triple and then watched as the Padres walked the next two runners to load the bases, a ballsy strategic move that is just plain nuts. Pitch-hitter Mark Sweeney hit an infield grounder to first and Durham beat the tag. Pretty exciting, actually. The Giants had a four run lead going into the sixth, partly due to Mr. Bonds who hit a two run home run in the first, #731, only to have the Padres come back. They are now three back of the Dodgers in the West, a 1 1/2 behind the Padres in the Wild Card, tied with the Phillies in the chase. We are totally kicking ourselvse for not going to the game as we were all set to go until we got hit with a strange bout of laziness.

Oh, and the A's lost to the Devil Rays, 9-6. Esteban Loaiza got shelled early, but the A's rallied to make it close. The Angels lost, however, so the A's are still 5 1/2 up in the West.

Yeah, don't get too comfortable because SJSU may have only one win this year but, at least it will count...it was against Stanford....
