We Read The Weeklies

ebx831.jpgLast week's winner, the East Bay Express: The Spare The Air advocates don't take BART. Book section: Their book reviewer thinks that Special Topics in Calamity Physics is pretentious. Cover article: the new hip downtown Oakland scene, and backlash. Korean food in Oakland. Amoeba's plans to counteract the downloading revolution -- among other things, they let you "rent" CDs by buying them at full price and then returning them for 75% back after you've ripped them onto your computer. Dude, that's genius.

Next up, oh, let's say.... the Metro! Fun liquor stores Gary Singh has known. Conspiracy theories about Ted Stevens and net neutrality. Fashion and the letter V. Cover article: some corporate dude gets all into alternative energy. Anthology of writings by Iranian women. Outdoor screening of The Breakfast Club in San Pedro Square on Sept. 6. And Straight Dope -- what happens if you refuse to pee?

Your San Francisco alt-weeklies after the jump, along with the Weekly of the Week.

The Bay Guardian: Tim Redmond was away when Sue Bierman died. Phil Angelides, Chris Daly, and Bevan Dufty against Walmart. Free Josh Wolf. Can we make Pacifica into the next Miami Beach? Cover article: Fall arts. Lots of lists for those of you who like that kind of thing. Lit section -- we like the cover! Michelle Tea on Seal Press. Someone miscalculated Paul Reidinger's bill. And SFist Eve's horoscope: "Be like a Project Runway contestant who won last week, has immunity, but still turns out a totally phenomenal outfit." SFist Eve is like that every week!

and the Weekly! Global Exchange writes a two and a half column letter about how Matt Smith is a hater. Matt Smith hates. Apologize for Frank Quattrone! The obligatory anti-Burning Man party at the Rickshaw Stop this Sunday. Cover article: some dude (maybe) stole murals from Mexico and gives them to the DeYoung. A review of a new video game about road rage, which kind of freaks us out in this week of Ohmeed Popal. Book section -- 10 years of the SF Center for the Book. And 10 years of dub at the Elbo Room. Do you think those two have anything to do with each other?

Weekly of the Week: Okay, we're going to be brutally frank here. It wasn't a stellar week this week. That said, we'll give it to the Weekly (even though we don't really have an opinion about Frank Quattrone). We're also going to start "renting" CDs from Amoeba. What's the name of that new Paris Hilton album again?

Amoeba's always had that policy. They use to call it "a return".

Don't forget your receipt, though.
