Everybody Hates Chris: The District 6 Election
The District 6 supervisor race just keeps heating up! This week's episode: Everybody Hates Diet Coke.
Incumbent Chris Daly was just endorsed by the San Francisco firefighters' union. We can't wait for the picture of Chris wearing a firefighter's hat and carrying a ladder!
BUT -- when the head of the Police Officers' Association, Gary Delagnes, heard the news, he hit the roof. He promptly fired off a note to the firefighters' union, reminding them that "[o]n one occasion, Daly went so far as to physically and verbally assault one of our officers," [in reference to Daly's 2002 run-in with the SFPD at Hastings. Here's Daly's version of the story.] and concluding that, "Your endorsement of Chris Daly can't help but weaken the bond between our two unions." Aw, Gary, why you gotta bring up old stuff?
The fire fighters' union head, who has family members in law enforcement, responded by (presumably) leaking the story to Matier and Ross, and noting that Daly has always backed their union's interests in contract negotiations and citywide propositions. "It's unfortunate, but that's the way it is," he said. "Maybe I could get Gary and Chris together over a Diet Coke and try to work things out."
Delagnes's response? "I don't drink Diet Cokes -- I drink screwdrivers. And I don't sit down with Chris Daly." If our memory serves us right, Chris drinks Chimay!
