When The Lights Go Down In The City
SFist had a rock-n-roll weekend that started last Friday night at Varnish for our 2nd birthday party. Not only did DJ Ted of BAGeL Radio rock the house with a few hours of his finest tracks, our friend Nick Tangborn from Jackpine Social Club also brought Mark Eitzel down for a few beers. It was great to meet some readers and the SFist bingo game was a real highlight, especially when one of our partygoers asked if she'd gotten bingo by drinking one of each in a category of cocktails from the drink menu. We like that kind of initiative.
Saturday afternoon we headed to the 2nd floor of the Apple store to sit on a free panel for the Bandwidth Music and Technology Conference. Parker Gibbs of GIBBSMO, whom we had previously only seen out in bars and at shows, proved to be a great moderator of our panel which included Elise Nordling of the fantastic SOMA-FM and Gray Gannaway of CD Baby. We came, we pontificated, we hope that we imparted some worthwhile knowledge. On Sunday we were in LA to attend another taping of "Rock Star Supernova" because we're big fans and our friend works on the show. Highlights for us were Ryan Starr's original song (where did that come from?), the entire audience laughing when Storm namedropped Verizon (edited out, of course), petting Gilby Clarke's adorable French bulldog/guest judge Chopper, and ending the night at a party at the rockers' mansion. We might be headed back for the finale on September 13th because, well, we're addicted.
On to this week's recommended shows: Tonight Popscene tops itself with a special 10th anniversary performance by The Killers. Yes, we said The Killers are playing in the tiny 330 Ritch. To our friend Aaron Axelson and everyone else who makes Popscene happen, we salute your taste, vision and pervasive influence. Cheers!
On Friday, do yourselves a favor and get to 12 Galaxies to see the man, the legend, Alejandro Escovedo, for a special solo acoustic performance. Tom Heyman and Jeffrey Luck Lucas open, so it will be an evening of real voices and staggering songwriting. Black Fiction celebrate a CD release with Tussle and The Dry Spells at Cafe Du Nord on Saturday. Upstairs in the Swedish Hall, SFist partygoer Mark Eitzel & the Lost Anchors of the Pacific Ocean play with Jesse Denatale. That's one-stop shopping.
On Monday we recommend getting a ticket for Revenge of the Book Eaters, a benefit for 826 Valencia, at Palace of Fine Arts Theatre. The lineup is so great that you'll forget you're actually being selfless and charitable by attending: performers include Dave Eggers, Aimee Mann, Jonathan Richman, Mark Kozelek, and Zach Rogue.
Will she or won't she? Cat Power is scheduled to peform two solo shows on Tuesday night at Great American. On Wednesday, one of the great voices of indie rock - he was emo before emo was emo - Jeremy Enigk (Sunny Day Real Estate, The Fire Theft) peforms at Great American.

Escovedo puts on a great show. I'm sorry to miss him this time.
I totally agree Mary - Alejandro's the real deal.
Killers = taste & vision?
Doogie, I'd personally count getting The Killers into a tiny club as "pervasive influence." For taste and vision, my vote would go to bands like Cut Copy and Scanners. Remember they're booking these bands before they ever get huge - you gotta respect that.
