The Ghana Youth Photo Project
Opening Benefit Reception: Fri., Aug. 25, 6-9 p.m.

Last October San Francisco Camerawork’s youth mentoring program First Exposures sponsored Jamie Lloyd’s trip to West Africa to bring a photography program to 11 youths in Ghana’s capital city of Accra. The children not only learned a new skill but were also given the opportunity to visually represent their country, culture, and religion through photographic images.

Lloyd met with her students three times a week and assigned photography projects including: animals, family, sports, self-portraiture, market days, and festivals. Field trips included a visit to an Internet café to view photography online and a field trip to the Daily Graphic newspaper, the largest newspaper in Ghana. This exhibition is the culmination of more than 200 rolls of film shot by the students.

Get Off The Phone
Opening Reception: Sat., Aug. 26, 7 p.m.

Arspace presents “Get Off The Phone!” Art works inspired by the recent cell phone phenomenon and how it affects our lives. The works featured include: installations, paintings, and video created by 10 San Francisco artists who came together to discuss their ideas and feelings on the subject. The artists are returning to their studios to lend their talents to “Get Off The Phone!” but also to commence a larger discussion on technology in general and how it effects our personal interactions with one other.
