Special all-SF shootings edition.
And the murder count keeps going up -- the latest: one man killed Thursday night at 25th and Harrison. It's the 57th SF homicide of the year. Meanwhile, late Wednesday night, two tourists in the drive-through at a Burger King in the Bayview were shot too. They managed to drive themselves to a hospital and are recovering.
It's been a bad month for crime, particularly in District 5, which has seen a monthlong gang war centered around the housing projects on Laguna Street, including a gun battle last Monday on Turk Street, and a guy shot for no apparent reason in the Northern Panhandle. On Wednesday, Supervisor Ross "Tough on Crime, Tender in our Hearts" Mirkarimi stopped by the site of the latest shooting, at Turk and Laguna (1 dead, one injured). Mirkarimi's called for an increase in police foot patrols to try and quell the killings, and there are calls to install video cameras in the area as well.
On the bright side, the SFPD caught a suspect, in the April shooting of a man at a District 5 community center. Keep up the good work!

Is it just me, or does anyone else think it's very odd that two tourists would be at a Burger King at Bayshore Boulevard and Faith Street? Not exactly Fisherman's Wharf. I'm guessing there might be more to this story.
The sad fact is that the city builds these new housing projects and then lets them become uninhabitable again due to the criminals and violence which were the problem in the first place. McCormack Baron Salazar, Inc. makes a pretty penny "managing" these New-Urbanist crackhouses.
Valencia Gardens will be open any day now; if they hurry they can add some bodies to this year's total. From the looks of it this will be another pastel jungle of doorways, driveways, and backyards turned into drug markets.
The murder rate soars, meanwhile Nimby Newsom cracks down on graffiti. There is a serious lack of leadership in Room 200 of SF City Hall.
Mayor Newsom opposed Prop A in June, which would have attempted to address the spiraling homicide rate. He now owes us an alternate plan.... and its not 'lets put a bounty on a tagger'
Nimby's "Summer Violence Prevention Plan" didn't come out until Summer had already started.
He can revoke an event permit in days if it disturbs a Democrat's wedding, but he's largely behind the curve on real crime and quality-of-life issues.
