Soap Gallery (1142 Howard Street)
The Brilliance of the All Knowing
Artist Reception: Fri., Aug. 18, 6-9 p.m.
The Brilliance of the All Knowing is a collective meditation on the human condition and its relation to nature. Each artist in this group show was given a series of reference graph charts from a nature stock photography book that cross referenced animals and landscapes with descriptive words ranging from human emotions to states of being. Subtracted from the images they reference, these charts offer a means to visualize nature in a variety of combinations ranging from dark to celebratory to humorous and more. Ranging in mediums, each artist has constructed a “nature” that is a point of departure and, at the same time, something that is emotively their own.

STUDIO Gallery (1718A Polk Street)
City Streets
Opening reception: Sat., Aug. 19 at 4 p.m.
Diverse views of the Bay Area are the inspiration behind City Streets, the third annual cityscapes show at STUDIO Gallery. Work in the show ranges from panoramic views to close-up perspectives. San Francisco painter Paul Ferney’s “View from Coit Tower” shows the city in silhouette, with the Golden Gate Bridge just visible on the horizon. Photographer Pep Ventosa uses dozens of individual photographs to develop a single view of a block of Columbus Avenue. San Francisco painter Nicholas Coley sets up an easel and paints on the street, where he frequently talks with interested onlookers as he works on his long perspectives of city blocks. Whatever the scene, it’s always worth a closer look.
