Animal Roundup

05_eleanor.jpgRemember the 2 seperate SFO-bound shipments of turkey chicks mishandled by Northwest Airlines? In both cases, the actions of Northwest cargo personel caused the death of thousands of young turkeys which were bound for a Fresno farm, intended to be raised for breeding or consumption. In a lucky turn for some, Orland-based Farm Sanctuary has adopted a number of the surviving chicks where they will live out the rest of lives free of the stress of either air travel or Thanksgiving.

Animal advocacy organizations are sponsoring SB1578, a bill limiting how long you can keep your dog tied up. Created at the request of California animal control officers in the state who were looking for specific and enforcable rules on how long a dog could be teathered, supporters also argue that long-term tying up leads to increased aggression and can cause injuries to the dog. When contacted for comment as a representative of the dog community, SFist Franny licked our face and went back to sleep.

Oh, no! Lost cat! Kuma, was a stray Burmese cat wandering the streets of Japan before his rescue by the mother of Eureka resident Kay White. After White's mother's death, Kuma flew to the Bay Area to join the Whites. Though he made it out of SFO unscathed, Kuma bolted during a litterbox break in the Betabel Road/Y Road area off 101 South. The Whites are hopeful that Kuma will be safely returned to them, and are offering a $1000 reward. Anyone with information on Kuma is urged to call Kimberly White at 831-394-4814 or 831-601-1314.
