We Read The Weeklies

large_readers_poll.jpgYes, yes, we usually start with last week's winner, but we're so excited about getting voted best local blog by the Guardian that we're dispensing with convention and starting off with them. Boo yah! Wanna know the best thing about being best local blog? Our listing is on the same page as Gavin Newsom's, for "best local politician," and the rabidly non-Newsom SFBG does such a tooth-grindingly good job making lemonade out of lemons for the write-up. Tooth-grindingly good! Also, we are tres into the "Best Meta" award, which goes to Aardvark Books, who will now have to take down their homemade "Never Been Voted Best Anything" sign. And congrats to the SFPartyParty, who won Best Fighters For Your Right To Party. We'll see you guys at the Best of the Bay shindig! Other highlights of this week's issue: they also point out that last week's SF Weekly and EBX cover articles were the same. SFist Eve's horoscope: your blog will win best local blog this week! We made it up -- but it's true!

cover-0630.jpgOkay, back to last week's winner, the Metro, who's also got a list issue -- the Metro User's Guide to Silicon Valley. Original Joe's in San Jose stays open until 1 a.m., folks -- get them spaghetti and meatballs late late late. Hey, that Palo Alto Coffee Roasting Company in the Stanford Mall next to the Books Inc. got thrown out -- mall management wanted a national chain. Boooooo. Did a Mountain View city councilman flip off the audience? Gary Singh on his high school. There's a Muslim Film Fest going on at the same time as the Jewish Film Fest (the Muslim one is one day only, in Fremont). And quilts about paranoia (we don't know what that means either).

The East Bay Express and the SF Weekly, after the jump, along with the Weekly of the Week.

The East Bay Express: Lots of letters about Cody's closing. Hey, there's going to be a lot more fights on the Oakland City Counsel after Dellums gets into office -- fun! Cover article: reporter goes to a drag race and sees a kid get hit by a car. Harrowing -- but really good, and we learned a lot about the whole local car scene. We also kind of freaked out about the picture of the guy's prone body on the ground, so take heed. New Woody Allen movie sucks. Crafting books are stupid. Eating in Temescal. A literacy-promoting death metal band. And doesn't Cee-lo look funny with a Gnarls Barkley fry cook hat on?

And the Weekly: Sign up for an HIV vaccine trial run and have as much sex as you were going to have anyways. Burning Man types trash the Jeremiah O'Brian national historic monument. Cover: by AC Thompson, formerly of the Guardian, about the fed crackdown on local gangs and their plea bargain techniques. Oooh, unattractive picture of the US Attorney Kevin Ryan (the one chasing after Barry Bonds too). Nothing wrong with old fashioned books. Meredith sees Chez Pim at Coi; SFist Ced corrects her French. Why has Ted Rall been moved to the food section listings? And who ya got -- the Oakland A's, or hip hop group the Oakland A'z?

Weekly of the Week: SFist Ced, that wag, queried whether our Best of the Blogs triumph this week would affect our Best of the Week analysis. Of course not! The Guardian wins purely on merit alone. See you at the party, Aardvark Books -- and bring Ace the dog-hating cat too! (You really should read the article about the kid who got hit by a car in front of the EBX reporter, though, it's really good.)
