Food Blog Round-Up

egg-cubed.jpgGrandmother's blackberry and blueberry pie was legendary in our family. She lived on the side of a mountain that was alternately blasted away by the stripminers and eaten away by the gypsy moths in a tiny town called, appropriately enough, Blandburg. But no matter how hard hit the mountain-side got, the berries in the backyard always came in thick. This led to amazing pies in the summer, a trend Shuna fully supports. No one lives in the house on the top of the mountain anymore, and in the last years our grandma did live there, no one picked the berries--partly because the bramble just got too overgrown, and partly because as they went more and more wild, you never knew when you'd come fact to face with a bear. We did learn how to make pies, but it's grandma, you know? They never taste as good. Blue Jean Chef loves blueberries just the same. And how about a little love for ugly fruit?

The other thing everyone can't stop talking about this week is the heat. No one wants to cook, while Chickpea has one delicious-sounding way to beat the heat that will let us take a break from our oft-relied-on gazpacho. On the other hand, Anni has a great twist on gazpacho that we're sure we're going to use. If none of that works, try some of these cool drinks. Don't stress though, as apparently we're half-way through summer. . .

And summer means summer school, though not the kind you need to pass in order to advance a grade. Evan Elliot's UC Extension class "The Literature of Food" is posting their writing. Annie's post touches on the generational legacy of food, much like Tea's post on her Russian ancestry. Both address how cooking was handed down--or not--in their families. And if you're going to learn to write about food, then you may as well learn to photograph it as well!

While you're writing, think about Sam, who's going to be marathon blogging for 24 hours straight on July 29 to help Food Runners, and is looking for sponsors. Head on over and help out while we start chilling enough melon gazpacho to sit and watch the whole thing happen.

Pic of the week is from A Fully Belly. It's an egg cuber. How cool is that?

Here's another one! This website helps to feed the food mind as well...more about the why/what of food than the how.
