Everybody Hates Chris: The District 6 Interview
Yup, we're still doing interviews for anyone in the District 6 race who'll answer our emails. Today, the guy everyone's calling the "downtown threat," Rob Black. Take it away, Rob!
What's your name, how old are you, and what do you do?
My name is Rob Black and I am 37 years old. To the disappointment of some I am not actually a financial advisor, porn star, rap artist or masked Mexican wrestler. My real story: I have been a union organizer (Screen Actors Guild), an international election and human rights advocate with the National Democratic Institute and President Jimmy Carter’s The Carter Center, a lawyer and a legislative aide to Supervisor Alioto-Pier.
So the name of the SFist District 6 election column is "Everyone Hates Chris." Why do YOU hate Chris Daly?
I don’t hate Chris. I like Chris. I like playing p0ker with Chris. I just think the residents of District 6 would be better served if he had a different job.
What do you think are the biggest problems facing District 6 today?
Straight up – quality of life. From all corners of the district, residents tell me that District 6 is dirty and dangerous. District 6 has less open space and recreation and park facilities than any other district in the City. The City is planning on building about 10,000 new units of housing in the District, and those units need to come with more green space. Lots more.
And while we’re on the topic of housing, District 6 needs more middle income housing units. My district has a housing supply shaped like an hour glass – lots of housing at the high and the low ends, but nothing in the middle. To keep District 6 healthy and vibrant, it needs more housing that is affordable to middle and lower middle income folks.
The real, non-rapper, non-porn star, non-financial planner, non Nacho Libre Jack Black Rob Black, above (check out the discreet puka-shell necklace!). Rob's thoughts on the commonalities between all District 6 residents, the fights he'll pick at City Hall, and the didgeridoo, after the jump.
What neighborhood in District 6 do you live in?
I live on Treasure Island.
What do you love about District 6? What do you hate about it?
I love the art. District 6 is the most artistic area of the City. District 6 is where San Francisco’s art is made, displayed, viewed, heard, bought and sold. I love the artists, too. They dress well.
I hate the violent crime. There have been at least two shootings in the South Park area in the last three weeks, as well as shootings in the Mission, and seniors and people with disabilities are too frequently attacked in the Tenderloin. Not acceptable.
District 6 is one of the most diverse districts in the City, ranging from the expensive condos down in South Beach to the SROs in the 'loin, from downtown corporate offices in SoMA to the left-wing hipsters in the Mission. How do you think all those interests can be accommodated? Should they all be?
All our diverse interests should absolutely be accommodated. At the Positively 6th Street Community Fair, a local resident and activist reminded me that there are many issues in which the vast majority of D6 people agree, and that we shouldn’t focus on our differences or disagreements. She is absolutely right. There are scores of common goals that cut across the district. Together, we can move mountains.
The Board of Supervisors is pretty strongly divided between so-called "progressives" and so-called "Newsom" allies. On that scale, let's say Daly is a 10 and Sean Elsbernd is a 1. Where would you put yourself on that scale? Explain your answer.
80% of the supervisors agree on 80% of all legislation. City Hall fights are so big because our actual differences are so small. All the Supes and the Mayor tend to agree on progressive issues like (a) respecting civil liberties and ensuring equal protection, (b) protecting our natural environment and people’s health and well being, and (c) promoting an ethical, representative government that is effective in enhancing the life of its citizens.
Dude, we love it when Daly gets in fights with people on the board. Will you promise to get in some fights too? Over what?
Absolutely, if I can wear a Mexican wrestler mask and all the proceeds go to charity!
--and (some of) your standard SFist interview questions:
Favorite local business
Crossroads Café – get a great bagel with responsibly grown coffee, and support the Delancey Street Foundation at the same time.
Best Deal in San Francisco
The Hardly Simply Bluegrass concert in Golden Gate Park: two days of the world’s best music for free.
Favorite mode of transportation/favorite MUNI line
The historic F-Line on Market Street.
Best Band or Musician to come out of the Bay Area
Chris Isaak, while originally from Stockton, is probably my favorite to make it big out of the Bay Area. However, my favorite musician currently working in San Francisco is Philip Claypool. If you haven’t caught one of his shows around town, you are missing out. He could be the most talented musician/songwriter currently playing in San Francisco.
Favorite Bay Area Stereotype, and whether or not you buy into it
The Bay Area is full of tree huggers. Thankfully, I think it's true, but we need to spend more time planting trees so we have more trees to hug.
Favorite local hangout
Edinburgh Castle at Geary and Larkin
Now that Mayor Gavin is single, who are you going to set him up with?
I'm sure he doesn't need my help in this department
You can tell someone is a local here if....
they can tell you where they were when the Dan White verdict was announced.
SF would be soooo much better if ...
only the Giants would win the World Series.
Best Burrito
Breakfast: breakfast burrito is at the Double Play Bar and Grill at 16th and Bryant.
Lunch: carne asada burrito at Taqueria Castillito at Golden Gate and Larkin.
You have two hours and $15 bucks to kill in SF, what are you going to do?
Window shopping on Valencia; but would probably end up blowing the $15 bucks on beer at Zeitgeist.
Tell us a San Francisco Story
So there I was at my wedding reception, wearing an Elvis costume and playing the didgeridoo, when …
