New Contributor Interview: Chris Johnson

cj1.jpg
Observant readers may have noticed that there is a new sports authority on SFist. Chris Johnson brings his inciteful (it’s only insightful if you agree with him we suppose) commentary to bear on local teams. He does have incredibly valuable parking tips (see below), so even if you don't agree with his articles, you will end up owing him (4 hours free?!!) Despite being a self-proclaimed Luddite and cynic, SFist had to wrest Chris away from his chosen nom de plume of “The Truthmaker”. He says it. You can fight it. In the comments. But no hits below the belt, please.

I wanted to be an SFist contributor because
I needed the structure.

Name
The TruthMaker. My glass is always half empty, deal with it.

Age and Occupation
Youngish late thirties. Laborer.

Home Town
Eastern San Diego County, CA

How long have you lived in the Bay Area and Where
Seven years. Guerrero Street; coastal mid-peninsula.

Favorite website
I mostly use the Web for information, rarely for entertainment, so I don't really have a favorite site; my most viewed sites are Washingtonpost.com and ESPN.com.

What I'm currently Reading
Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson

Best Deal in San Francisco
The free four-hour parking west of the San Francisco Maritime Museum. From there you can totally do all the North Beach, Marina, Fort Point/Presidio points of interest and still be close enough to bounce back every four hours to rub out the chalk. Mid-week availability of spots is ample.

Favorite mode of transportation
Bicycle. Mountain or road, trail or pavement.

Best Band or Musician to come out of the Bay Area
So many, so many. Again, the best? Some of my many favorites are Creedence, Primus, the Dead, and Jefferson Airplane.

Favorite local hangout
I don't get out much.

SF has the BEST:
Aura.

You've never lived in SF until:
You've lived as cheaply as possible for an entire year in a dank and/or drafty apartment with pitiful paychecks, but loved every minute of it and had the time of your life.

Favorite Bay area politician of past or present:
Barbara Lee, US Rep, 9th Congressional District, CA. The only person in either the House or the Senate in 2001 to vote against giving Bush the unchecked power he has so arrogantly abused since then.

Now that Mayor Gavin is single, who are you going to set him up with?
Like I give a shit about his personal life. Keep the focus on his politics please.

You can tell someone is a local here IF:
They look relaxed.

SF would be soooo much better if only:
It had less cars.

Best Burrito:
The best ever was Simon's Spanish Shop on the corner of 24th and Castro in Noe Valley. Simon's burros were so good, that when I was working salmon in Alaska in 1994, I asked my (now) wife to bring one to me in a cooler when she came to visit. She did and it was magical.

Best Restaurant:
The Miramar Beach Restaurant, Half Moon Bay.

Best movie scene filmed in or about SF:
Chase scene from Bullitt.

I want all the SFists out there to know:
We're here to rock the house, uh-huh uh-huh, we're here to rock it down, come-on come-on! (Repeat)

Tell us a San Francisco Story:
You've got a 16-foot car, it's a 17-foot space, it's dark, it's foggy, you're on a hill, you're driving a stick.

Question you'd ask if you were doing this interview:
Do you realize that all of this information you are providing is soooo going in your NSA file?

Favorite author to come out of the bay area:
Dashell Hammett. Jack Kerouac, Jack London. Does Steinbeck count?

Place you always tell visitors to check out:
North Beach for a night of revelry.

Favorite Bridge in the area:
Nothing beats the ol' double G.

You have two hours and $15 bucks to kill in SF, what are you going to do?
Pocket the $15, and bust down the singletrack in Golden Gate Park on my mountain bike, out to the Cliff House, over into the Presidio, and across the Bridge.

I have found/sold/bought the following on craigslist:
Work.
