When The Lights Go Down In The City

The ConstantinesDid anyone else get rocked at The Constantines' show last Friday at Cafe Du Nord? The packed and energetic crowd was treated to songs off their last three albums plus a passionate encore of "I'm A Man" by the Spencer Davis Group. After the show singer Steve Lambke was kind enough to let us compliment their set and tell us what he'd been reading (The Old Testament) and what albums influenced The Cons' sound (he mentioned The Millenium). We're postponing our regular giveaway until later this week, but stay tuned because it should be leave a lasting impression.

On to this weeks' show picks: Tonight you can catch a free show by experimental sibling duo The Fiery Furnaces at 6pm at Amoeba. They headline the Fillmore later with Man Man. Start doing your stretches now, because Annie's Social Club presents Hesher, an evening of heavy metal karaoke. We'd never heard The Slip before this week. We liked the songs we heard from their website, including the new single "Even Rats"; it sounded like smart, organic indie rock along the lines of a hi-fi Sebadoh. But the older songs we heard on Rhapsody sounded jammy and meandering, so we're confused. Figure out their sound for yourself when The Slip plays with Black Fiction tonight at Café Du Nord and on Friday at Hotel Utah.

There's a festival's worth of local talent at Parkerpalooza Friday night at 12 Galaxies, including Kelley Stoltz, Oranger and more. Get there early and imbibe some $2 Miller and $2 shots along with the cupcakes they'll be serving. Sound Team headlines The Independent with the horribly named Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and Peter Walker. The lovely Calexico begins a two night stand at The Fillmore with The Black Heart Procession.

The HusbandsOn Saturday, female trio The Husbands are at The Independent to play songs off their new album There's Nothing I'd Like More Than To See You Dead. It's a fun mix of surf rock guitars, swinging drum beats, and vocals that veer from "Leader of the Pack"'s camp to Joan Jett's grit. Tapes N' Tapes have managed to sell out Cafe Du Nord Saturday with Cold War Kids and Figurines. We saw Tapes N' Tapes at SXSW and just didn't get what the hype was about, but maybe it's just us.

Pray for gorgeous weather on Sunday afternoon because it's the start of the Stern Grove festival! Aimee Mann kicks off the season with opener and Seu Jorge. The fellow Anderson protegees (hers is P.T., his is Wes) should find the green grove setting truly cinematic. Speaking of gorgeous settings for summer concerts, be sure to peruse The Mountain Winery's schedule because their concert series kicks off this weekend. Sunday night, catch the latest in hip rock with The Futureheads and the French Kicks at the Fillmore, or get a little more emotional Snow Patrol with Augustana at the Warfield -- Thanks to a tip emailed in by Daniel, we've learned that the Snow Patrol tour was cancelled! If you want to truly mellow out, head to the Makeout Room for Playing in Fog's "Hanging on a Star: a tribute to Nick Drake" with The Red Thread, The Music Lovers, Scrabbel, Charles Atlas, The Lonelyhearts, and more.

On Monday night fans of eclectic noise rock should be at Bottom of the Hill for Frenetic Records' Triple Record Release Show featuring ZU, Pink Mountain and Citay. We'll be at Great American to see our pal Jeff Klein open for The Twilight Singers featuring Greg Dulli & Mark Lanegan. On Wednesday, Built To Spill play the first of four nights at Slim's, and Popscene throws a free party with Sparks and XLR8R to preview Thom Yorke's solo album The Eraser. They'll also be giving away tickets for Radiohead's show at The Greek.
