Barry in '07? Just Say No
Even if it's not 100% sure that it's going to happen, the question of whither Barry in 2007 is out there. He's said he'd like to play, his agent said he'd like to play, and everyone thinks he's going to play. He does have a big record to chase, after all.
And last week, the USA Today reported that Barry and the Giants have begun the negotiation dance.
While most of the speculation has it that Barry will be AL-bound, to some place where he can just DH and while away his time on the bench during the other team's ups, the Giants resigning him is still a possibility. Even if Magowan so far sounds dubious. Those debt remittance payments ain't gonna pay themselves after all and the Barry Bonds Circus gives the Giants the skills to pay the bills. You know that despite everything they say, mass temptation is involved. Call it the Last Temptation of Magowan.
But we'd like to say right here and right now that we don't want them to resign Barry. As much as we've enjoyed the Barry Bonds Circus, we don't think the Giants should renew it for '07. And, after the jump, we got five reasons why we think the Giants should Just Say No
1)What Is And What Should Never Be- You know how it's a tenet of existentialism that what’s happened in the past doesn't matter and only the present matters? Well, Sartre would look at the stats and say what we have here is a .250 hitter who can't run, can't play defense, and is one bad step away from another serious injury. He would then light up a cigarette and nail some 19-year-old Brigitte Bardot wannabe through the sheer genius of this statement.
2)No Drama- Ever have a crazy SO who you totally love and is a lot of fun and really hot but a little bit crazy? They'll get drunk and say embarrassing things or start fights or piss off your friends and after awhile you get tired of constantly having to apologize to everyone for them? And at some point, you want to dump them and date a shy, quiet, calm, person who is a little boring but who you don't have to be afraid of taking out in public? That's Barry. We're tired of defending him, we're tired of being called losers for defending him, we're tired of compromising our own values and beliefs to support what in essence is a lying, cheating, jackass. We love it when the lying, cheating, jackass hits home runs and leads us to victories, but we no longer feel good about it.
3)Oh Lord, Won’t You Buy Me a Mercedes Benz?- After the 2001 season, Barry resigned with the Giants for a little under 20 mil. Considering the Giants try and hold to a 80 million dollar budget, Barry takes up close to 1/4 of the Giants budget. Wanna know why the Giants haven't been so good since 2003? The Giants haven't been able to sign players they really wanted to or should have kept (Kent) and unable to sign free agents who could step up and help the team out (mainly replacing Kent). They've had to do bargain hunting, trying to look for cheap free agents which in their case has usually meant aging, over-the-hill veterans (where do we begin?) and oft-injured gambles (Alfonso, Durham, Morris). Since 2002 really, the Giants have never really fielded a lineup that was consistently good from 1-8 and haven't had many pitching horses to help them out. What's been the biggest Giants' problem since '03? Bullpen. What's the surest sign of a team made up on the cheap? Weak bullpen. Getting rid of Bonds frees up the money to go sign themselves some new players.
But what about signing him for cheap. Like at Frank Thomas money? First off, check out the rest of this post. Second of all, do you really think Barry is going to come cheap? The dude makes almost $20 a year and is in trouble with the IRS for not reporting card show money.
Which brings us to...
4)Blow Up the Outside World- Since '02, the main strategy of the Giants has been Win One for Barry. The result of which has been to sign aging vet after aging vet after aging vet in hopes they could somehow put together one more solid year and somehow luck into the playoffs again. And how's it been working? Since '03 the Giants have been pretty much a .500 team. And not only a .500 team, a not very exciting, often painful to watch team. We want this team blown up and we want the franchise rebuilt. We're tired of reading stories about shiny, new rookies and all sorts of goodies to be found in franchise's farm systems and it not being about the Giants. We're tired of reading about teams being "up and comers" and being "on the rise" and it not being about the Giants. Hell, we're tired of reading about teams that average under 30 and it not being about the Giants. Out with the old, in with the new we say.
5)You're a Star Fucker, Star Fucker, Star Fucker, Star Fucker- It happens almost several times a year-- after a weekend series, there's a letter to the Sporting Green from some irate parent saying how they took their kids to a game, only to discover Barry wasn't playing and, well, Won't Somebody Think of the Children? Which brings us to the fact that Barry has become the Giants to the point where it doesn't really matter what the team does, only what Barry does. The Giants could win a game 162-0 with Noah Lowry not only throwing a perfect game but striking out all 27 batters and Steve Finley could hit five triples, yet the story would be "Giants Win 162-0, Barry Goes 0-4" We want to root for a team, not for a player. And yes, we hate to sound like a snot, but it would be nice to go to a game and not be surrounded by a bunch of people who essentially do nothing but wait around for Barry to hit, then leave the moment it becomes obvious he won't bat anymore.
