SFist Watches: TV Tonight

hex.jpg
Waiting for tonight...whoa-oh.

NBC is plopping a new drama series in the 10 p.m. Thursday slot tonight, and it's called "Windfall." Summer series? Or midseason replacement that never made the cut and is being burned off in the next couple of weeks? You be the judge. It's an ensemble drama about a bunch of friends who win the lottery, and examines how the money effects them all differently. Luke Perry is amongst the cast, as is Jason Gedrick. In other words: no one exciting.

We're much more interested in the U.S. debut of the British series "Hex," which premieres tonight on BBC America with a two-hour episode at 7 p.m. (with a repeat at 10 p.m.) Set in a mysterious boarding school, it centers on a teenage girl who just can't seem to get in with the cool kids, and then begins to realize she's got some spooky powers. Soon, as is usually the case, a battle between the forces of good and the forces of evil ensues. The series has been touted as the "British Buffy," which gives us equal parts excitement and dread. We miss us some good supernatural TV dramas, but will have little tolerance for an outright rip-off of "Buffy." The series premiered in 2004, and ran for two seasons. It's limited run is slightly troubling, but we'd be interested in hearing from anyone who's seen the show, or watched it on DVD. Worth watching? Or should we stick to "Windfall"?

Hex sounds good from all I've heard of it, though I hear it's best to think of it only as sharing a genre with Buffy. According to Wikipedia, a third season has been ordered by SkyTV, so this show is still going.

Ah, the glory of Wikipedia and it's occasional minute-by-minute updating...according to the site right now, it hasn't been renewed.

And this article from April says the same:

Agree one should try and approach the series with an open mind, and not immediately start comparing it to Buffy. But when you're dealing with a teenage girl fighting supernatural evil and shit, that's kind of hard to do.

But maybe it'll turn out to be more "Charmed" than "Buffy." Not that that's preferable!
