SFist Watches: TV Tonight

janice.jpg
While some consider Memorial Day the official start of summer, we know it is marked by a different occasion: the premiere of crappy summer TV shows! While last week was a nice little vacation from TV slavedom, complete with even more deletions from the TiVo Season Pass list, those empty spots are quickly getting filled up. Let's see what the evening has to offer, shall we?

Tonight is devoted to slightly nightmarish plastic surgery-laden attention whores. First up is the second season of "Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List," which premieres at 9 p.m. on Bravo. We've got a love/hate relationship with Kathy. When she's poking fun at celeb royalty--and let's face it, that's her primary shtick now--she can be quite brutal and funny. But too often on her show, she acts exactly like the spoiled celebrities she skewers, and she very rarely acknowledges that irony. She's slowly turning into a genuine famewhore, and is getting kind of boring in the process. Nonetheless, we're tuning in to see just what the hell was up with that (apparently) temporary split with her husband last year. Was that genuine? Or just another attempt to garner some more publicity in-between show seasons? Frankly, we're a little scared to find out.

Yes, Kathy Griffin can be scary. But when it comes to freakish plastic surgery and an almost sociopathic need for media attention, no one outshines the divine miss Janice Dickinson. She hasn't been on "America's Next Top Model" for several seasons now, and the show has suffered mightily as a result. We were happy when we heard she was going to join the cast of "The Surreal Life" for a season last year, but then we watched the show, and Janice's antics which, while limited to about 10 minutes of screen time on "ANTM" were outrageous and entertaining, ended up being scary, pathetic and ultimately, quite sad during an entire 20 minutes of "The Surreal Life" each week. (We'll concede that the presence of Bronson Pinchot in that house might have contributed to the season's ultimate ick-factor.) So we're not quite sure what to expect from "Top Model" rip-off "The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency" which premieres at 10 p.m. on Oxygen--and we may never find out because we don't get the Oxygen network! Even though we have digital cable and everything! There's nothing "Comcastic" about that!!

Is it Kathy Griffin's comedy routines or show(s) that are getting boring? I am fascinated by her. Everytime she's on TV, I am cracking up. Seeing her interview in the NY Times on getting skewered by the fashion police was the first time I stopped thinking she was the annoying Suddenly Susan chick to comedy genius. She picks targets that scare others-Dakota Fanning anyone? I think she shows her human side but does have a little bit of a diva/anal retentive thing going. It's probably un-PC to say, but she makes me want to have my own "gays" as friends. They seem to have so much fun together.
