Last week's winner, the San Jose Metro: Again, we're reduced to reading it online, as our source wasn't in the South Bay this week. Cover article: fashion in the San Jose city hall. What are all these positions we're voting on for? A handy-dandy guide. Exciting inside SJ politics with the Fly, and their new SJ politics blog, SV411.org. Al Gore and his movie. Skateboarders come to town. And soft-shell crab.
Next up, the SF Weekly: Matt Smith, again with the Fourth Street Bridge. A hater about whether or not California was part of Mexico in the Apologist on immigration. Some kind of weird role-playing game that we must confess we don't really get, called SFZero. If you'd like to explain it to us in the comments, we'd be much obliged. Ask a Track Bike cracks us up with his Mission Hipster barbs! ("[Mission Hipster] bikes are meant as showpieces to be locked up in front of Ritual Coffee Roasters." So true!) Obnoxious garb at Bay to Breakers. Cover article: the band Comets on Fire. Paean to the local bookstore, with the point that you can't even really hate on chains because when it comes right down to it, all bookstores are awesome. True! (but you should continue to support your local indie bookshop.) Al Gore. Twofer from Meredith -- one cookbook review, one restaurant. And SFist Eve's horoscope -- her mission this week is to find at least one of the following: allies, sanctuaries, resources, inspirations, and pleasures. Let's get on that, co-editor!
The East Bay Express and the Guardian after the jump, along with the Weekly of the Week.
The EBX: Okay, there was some disgusting brown schmutz on the back cover of the EBX we picked up today; we gingerly balled up the entire page and threw it away, and then washed our hands thoroughly with soap. Eww. The column we call "the dream comic" but last week's angry commenter wants us to call by its proper name "Slow Wave" is just okay today. We call lots of things by the wrong name! We don't call Annalee Newitz "Techsploitation" and you don't see her getting all worked up about it! But anyways. Alameda Superintendent Sheila Jordan's boyfriend writes a letter in her defense. A huge series of articles (all links listed in that link) about how the MediaNews Group is going to destroy news in the East Bay, along with an article that's supposed to defend the EBX from claims that it's also owned by a chain but ends up as a eulogy to Judith Moore instead. Okay, we've been kind of ignoring the whole MediaNews Group thing but you've convinced us, EBX, this does look like it's not going to be very good for newsgathering in the future. It's pretty interesting. Asians talk funny in recent releases. YouTube is a good way to waste time. And lots of benefits for the West Memphis Three this weekend.
And the Guardian: Hey, vote for us as best local blog for Best of the Bay! We want to go to the party!! It's the print-n-save election endorsements cover (which should ideally come with a pullout with short explanations for why they've endorsed everyone they've endorsed). Why does Gavin Newsom suck? Why? Why? Why? Answer: he doesn't do anything. This is a really good article! Even if it's mostly about land use. Lots of good explanations about board politics too. We loved it! We are also loving this chart, called "the good vote guide," where the starting assumption is that the Guardian's position is "the good vote." Chris Daly aces this test, with a 100%! A shiny gold star for Supervisor Daly! At the bottom is Michela Alioto-Pier who got an 11.1% Wait, Michela Alioto-Pier voted with the Guardian on something? (banning demolition of buildings with rent control units and $20 million for affordable housing.) Giant Drag doesn't want you to focus on their funny song titles (like "You F*** Like My Dad" and "Kevin Is Gay"). Our copy has two copies of the record reviews (pages 33 and 34). And we are so going to the SF Accordion Festival this Sunday!
Weekly of the Week: Oooh, it's a toughie between the Newsom expose and the MediaNews takeover. You're both winners this week, EBX and the Guardian!

I learn so much from the Guardian endorsements. I was on the fence about Prop 82, but now that they endorsed it, I'm definitely voting against it. Also, I think I'm way pro-Ma now as well. Thanks, SFBG!!!
Newsom is kind of a sad sack on a lot of issues. I confess I voted for the guy, mainly because he promised Compstat, Citystat, and some desperately needed law enforcement, but most of these never came to pass. I get more SFPD watching my luggage at the airport than there are watching my entire neighborhood.
Mirkarimi seems to be more of a hands-on guy, probably because he doesn't have to spend time raising money for the Democrats.
