When The Lights Go Down In The City

Once again the musical offerings in San Francisco are so plentiful and compelling that they force us into stressful choices. The upside is that no matter what you decide this week, you really can't go wrong.

Let's get the first difficult choice out of the way by making you decide which giveaway to go after. Two amazing San Francisco acts are headlining shows on Friday night -- The Court and Spark celebrate the release of their new album Hearts at Great American, and John Vanderslice holds court at The Independent.

Court and SparkIf you want two tickets to see The Court and Spark with Jason Molina (of Magnolia Electric Co & Songs:Ohia), Black Fiction, The Finches, and DJ Kelley Stoltz at Great American Music Hall, enter to win here. (Hurry up; we're picking a winner by 6pm today!)

Pixel RevoltIf you don't already own John Vanderslice's latest masterpiece, Pixel Revolt, we think it's time to rearrange your priorities. One of you will be let off the hook when we send you a free copy. Enter to win. (Contest ends 5/17. Winner will be notified by email.)

And on to the rest of the week's concert choices. Tonight you could keep it mellow and beautiful at Great American with the lulling folk of Over The Rhine and Hem, or catch something truly unique at the U.S. Air Guitar Championships at the Independent. Yes, we said "air guitar". Finger-syncing. Virtual noodling. You have to see it to believe it.

You're probably still trying to figure out if you can catch both The Court and Spark and John Vanderslice's shows on Friday, so allow us to complicate your decision by telling you that some exciting musicians are special guests of Skeleton Key, a benefit for the West Memphis Three at 111 Minna. Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra, Jonathan Richman and our favorite rock legend Matt Gonzalez will be there.

Dionne hosted Solid GoldOn Saturday, you have a wide arrange of formidable female vocal talents to choose from. Jolie Holland has a new album out on Anti called Springtime Can Kill You, so head to Amoeba to buy a copy and hear her sing for free at 2pm. That night Regina Spektor plays The Independent, and newcomer Brandi Carlile is at Great American with Gran Bel Fisher. If you're a fan of Patty Griffin, we highly recommend checking out Brandi for her delicate and heart-wrending melodies. And did you know the diva Dionne Warwick performs at a high-dollar benefit for the Lincoln Theater? We just mention that so we can show this photo from Solid Gold and remind ourselves how old we are.

On Sunday, the Mission Creek Music and Arts Festival begins. Check out the full schedule to stress out over all the amazing choices and stay tuned to SFist for our previews and recommendations. Two of you won autographed Ane Brun CDs last week, so we know you'll want to see her live Sunday night at Argus Bar. If you want to see The Fall and Birdmonster, you can choose Sunday or Monday night at the Independent.

Whatever you decide, just get out and see some great music this week. We leave you with this nonsensical and perplexing quote by Billy Corgan: "What I choose is my choice." That's deep.

"...the musical offerings in San Francisco are so plentiful and compelling..."

No, no. They aren't.
