Food Blog Round-Up

Don't know if it's the roast that's in the oven, or the fact we've been spending way too much time in the desert lately, but after looking at the posts we flagged this week, it seems incredibly obvious we have a jones for the veggies. We don't seem to be in any imminent danger of going vegan (remember the roast in the oven?) but spring has brought out our lust for the greenery. Which mean's we're loving 101 Cookbooks post on The Organic Cook's Bible, which sounds absolutely thorough with its ingredient profiles. We're still not sure how she turns that into a recipe for home-made energy bars, but it works. Catherine gets this week's nomination for "Best Reason the Internet Needs Smell-o-Surfing" with her olfac-terrific posting about Portobello and Veggie towers. And we're not sure how it smells, or tastes, but it certainly took guts--or not, as the case may be--for Rae to make a completely vegan haggis. And Berkana, well, maybe next time she'll carmelize the onions more. Random vegetable soup fact: Conan O'Brien has said that one of the reasons he chose Andy Richter for his partner in late-night was because at their first meeting over lunch, Andy ordered borscht.

But don't worry, we still have a soft spot in our hearts for meat, which means these two posts on fried chicken (livers) also went over big. We especially liked "frying" the chicken in the oven--that's going the distance to indulge your cravings.

Maybe it's all the dry wines, but Tom Wark rarely gets giddy. So when he does, well, it makes for fun and infectious reading. Kung Foodie also gets playful this week with a delightful post on bread sculpture, including some by Jean Paul Gaultier.

Finally, we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the Eat Local Challenge, now in full swing for the month of May. Click on that link for a great group blog about the challenge, and links to individual sites of people participating.

I love that "vegan haggis" is not a contradiction in terms. I recall having vegetarian haggis in Edinburgh, tho no telling whether it was vegan. Still, even the real deal is not as gross as most people assume.
