We Read The Weeklies
Last week's winner, the Bay Guardian: Mocking Dede Wilsey and Newsom about the DeYoung parking situation. The Guardian gets distracted from its single-minded focus on Village Voice LLC to decry MediaNews's purchase of the San Jose Merc News. Letter from a Peoples Temple survivor asking for further investigations into a CIA conspiracy. Hipsters worry that they're accidentally causing gentrification in Oakland. Sonic Reducer reviews an album of songs sung by actors. You know, we may have to download the version of Ewan McGregor singing Sade (or Jennifer Garner singing a show tune. It's totally awesome to work out to!!!!!.) A review of the Flipper reunion show from April 8. It took them a month to get that up? New brunch place in Noe Valley, Shanghai soup dumplings in the Sunset. Cover: Daniel Clowes. And SFist Eve's horoscope: be more confrontational. Watch out, crazy commenters!
The SF Weekly: Nate Cavallieri, ex-Weekly writer, won a journalism award for his cover article about a guy who works with gang members. Congratulations, Nate! Matt Smith on Chris Daly, Mission Housing, and someone saying that Daly speaks with a "forked tongue" -- outraged Matt Smith spittle flying everywhere! N.B.: Matt Smith reports that Chris Daly has adopted a policy of "not speaking to me." Gay cop sues. Orphan pigeon rescue. Cover article: why won't the SF Unified School District back smaller schools? Meredith goes BBQ, while SFist Ced roasts some ribs of his own! And Savage Love: do any fetishists want to buy a letter-writer's breast milk? Direct all responses to Dan Savage, not us.
The EBX's Best Of issue, and the Metro -- after the jump.
The East Bay Express: Best Of's! It's way too hard to figure out how their website works this week so there's no links for the winners. SFist gets beaten out for best local blog by DailyKos (readers) and our beloved Your Waitress. SFist also does not win best theatrical performance, which goes to the Contra Costa Civic Theater. Man, do we love a list issue. Here's some random winners: best strippers: Bench and Bar. Best local scene: the same folks who worried to the Guardian that they were bringing death and gentrification in their wake, Art Murmur. Best moment: the E-40 video for "Tell Me When To Go." Best soul food: Nellie's on 3rd and Adeline in Oakland. Best meat: the Oliveto's Annual Whole Hog festival, where you eat six courses of pork. Homemade salami!! Best cupcakes: Love At First Bite. We're not going to tell you who won best dominatrix, you'll have to pick up the actual issue to find that out. In other news, the new music guy on the Drive-By Truckers (though why's his name Rob Trucks about the Drive-By Truckers? Is that you, Harvilla?)
And the Metro: Are animal rights activists rude? Gary Singh's favorite band from the 80s, Verbal Abuse. Ms. Newitz goes to Manhattan. Why won't Stanford use the $9 million it's been given to start an Islamic studies program? Cover: Four South Bay hip-hop producers. New restaurant Mantra in Paly. Compromises in a mixed-food couple (one's veg, the other's not). An artist named Gary Coleman, where the article does not even mention once that he has kind of an unfortunate name. The one live music venue in San Jose/Campbell closes down. Straight Dope: getting slapped upside the head. And why is car insurance so expensive?
And the Weekly of the Week? You know, we were all set to give it to the EBX, since we love Best Of issues -- but both SF-based weeklies made a sufficiently strong showing to beat 'em out. Further complicating the electoral college, the Guardian and the Weekly kind of cancel each other out in our minds this week too -- so our Florida 2000-style winner this week is the Metro! Lawsuits, hanging chads, and Katherine Harris-style shenanigans soon to follow!

As the Metro reported...it is such a loss that the Gaslighter has to close. This would be a prudent opportunity for someone named Matt Gonzalez to step in and save it. The Gaslighter is a great venue for local acts and would make an awesome art house or even ...uh ...campaign headquarters for state office run..maybe...
d'oh! sorry guys. in my acceptance speech i listed you as one of my biggest influences though. ok, i didn't get to give no stinking speech, but if i had you'd be in there! ;-)
awww, thanks, Your Waitress! Your blog is totally better than ours -- we're so proud of you!
rob trucks ain't the express's new music editor, he's a contributor. the new editor is david downs -- and goddamn if he doesn't have big shoes to fill.
