When The Lights Go Down In The City

EditorsIf you like Joy Division and Interpol, why haven't you bought the Editors record yet? These UK-born and University-bred blokes deliver the same style of disaffected echoing vocals paired with disco drum beats and guitar melodies that ring like alarms. Listen to "Munich" [Real / Windows Media] off their record The Back Room that recently came out here in the States.

We have two tickets for you to go see their sold out Popscene show on Saturday night at 330 Ritch Mezzanine with Stellastarr* and Monsters Are Waiting. (We picked a winner, and apologize for getting the show location wrong the first time!)

Tonight you could see Quasi at Cafe Du Nord, or the Magic Numbers at Slim's, or maybe you got a ticket to see The Go! Team and Dungen at Great American. All would be great choices. But if you like a little film in your music, and vice versa, head to the Castro Theatre for a screening of Harry Smith's experimental animated film Heaven and Earth Magic presented by the SFIFF. Deerhoof will be providing their mind-bending live score to the film, followed by a set of their own tunes. [Get tickets.]

Yeah Yeah YeahsOn Friday, wave to SFist Jon at the Yeah Yeah Yeahs show at the Warfield and read his live review next week.

On Saturday, the fine folks at the Rickshaw Stop present the Three Kinds of Stupid Spring Fling Dance Party with a live set by Harold Ray: Live in Concert! and DJs BAS, Caldridge, and Brother Grimm ("Bardot a Go Go"). The first 100 customers get a free mix CD of that's guaranteed to both great and of questionable legality, and what's not fun about that? Also on Saturday is a benefit for the film "Bachelorette, 34" by local filmmaker Kara Herold at El Rio featuring Hey Willpower. We're not sure what Hey Willpower has to do with "a humorous look at society’s obsession with marriage, through the lens of a mother-daughter relationship," unless those mothers and daughters just like to shake their asses to great pop music with costumes and choreography. Set your Tivos on Saturday to Henry Rollins' show on the IFC because the local boys in Black Rebel Motorcycle Club are appearing.

We're really hoping that our press tickets come through for the 30 Seconds To Mars show at the Great American on Sunday. Because, well, Jordan Catalano.

Back to the indie rock. Next week TV on the Radio and Celebration play two nights at the Independent, and Morningwood shimmies at Slim's. Prepare yourself for some Janet Weiss sightings since she'll be all over town with Quasi and Sleater-Kinney. And finally -- will she or won't she? Cat Power's re-scheduled to play at the Palace of Fine Arts on May 3rd and 4th with the Memphis Rhythm Band. We wonder what the Memphis Rhythm Band thinks of cancelling performances? We like to imagine their response to that question including something about walking barefoot in the snow uphill, or somehow resembling the postman's creed.

editors are playing mezzanine saturday

I'm not seeing the Magic Numbers on the schedule on the Slim's web site. Was this gig just recently added to the schedule?

mike,

The Magic Numbers was last night (Thursday). That's probably why you don't see it on the site.

Aw man! I apologize for saying Editors was at 330 Ritch -- my typing fingers were on autopilot. Thanks for the correction!
