SFist Reads A Little

irslogo.gif
Remember when we told you about the Northern California Book Awards? SFist reader Mark went, and blogged it. From his post you can see that it wasn't the event it could have been -- and, in fact, he emailed us a day later with this link to Liz Henry's experiences at Lambda Lit night. In his words, "The contrast between the two events is, I think, instructive", and we're inclined to agree. As Mark asks on his blog, "Why does there have to be such a gap between the old scene and the new scene?" Let us know what you think in the comments!

SFist Rita just finished Game of Shadows, by Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams. You know, it sounds like Barry Bonds might really have been on steroids!

SFist Cedric has been reading the sudoku puzzle in the Chronicle. Just like the NYTimes crosswords, or relationships or fitting in those pants, it becomes more and more difficult every day. Except it's reset to walk-in-the-park easiness at the start of every week, a feature we wish we had for our other issues.

SFist Jer has been reading two most excellent government publications, the guidebooks to filling out Federal Form 1040 and California Form 540 (and, as much as we like our pals at the CA Franchise Tax Board, we're hoping to avoid having to chat with them this year). Beware the ides of April.

Tax day is not the ides. The ides, In the ancient Roman calendar, fall on the eighth day after the nones, which in March, May, July, Octobe is the 15th of the month. In all other months the ides fall on the 13th. So today (Thurs April 13), not the 15th, is/are the ides of April. ... And as I recall, only the ides of March were regarded as unlucky. Though I could be wrong there.

Tax day is also April 17th this year.
