Beard Papa Brings Cream Puffs To SF

3113489_1534fa7e2d_m.jpgAs we were cadging a ride home from SFist Eve on Saturday night, we squealed with delight as we drove down Mission Street. Right by Yerba Buena Lane, there's a big sign: BEARD PAPA'S COMING SOON.

What? You don't know about Beard Papa? Beard Papa is the Japanese cream puff store with cream puffs as big as your head, and beloved by team Gothamist (and team LAist too.)

The last time we had a Beard Papa cream puff, we bit into it at the wrong angle and somehow ended up completely covered in powdered sugar. We can't wait to beg for a bathroom key from the Japanese puff staff and scrub ourselves clean in our very own home town!

Now if they'd just open a Rice to Riches in SF, there will be no need to ever visit New York ever again. (Why should San Franciscans be deprived of delectable rice pudding just because the original store was a money laundering front? We're very open-minded, at least when it comes to rice pudding!)

I saw the sign and also yelped with joy. Nothing makes you feel like you're back in Japan (or China) like a bearded white guy. Or at least cream puffs or, uh.... They are totally delicious. A plea to all SF-ers: eat the puffs so that they stay in business!!

OMG! I first met Beard Papa on Nathan Road in Hong Kong and went every single day for my cream puff fix. Then I traveled all the way to the upper west side in NYC for some. This new development is very dangerous... to the waistline.

I've been stalking that site for weeks and finally broke down and wrote to them. They open May 12. Some people have savings accounts--I'm starting a Beard Papas account to accomodate my habit!

I'm obsessed with the cream puffs at Cam Huong, a Vietnamese bakery in Oakland's Chinatown, on Webster St. at 11th St. (I think). Their puffs are a distinctively undainty treat: rather super-sized and of eggy batter, but perversely satisfying.

This is stupendous news. Now all's we need is a Dunkin Donuts and I'll be satisfied. Fat and satisfied.

now, these cream puffs: is there filling inside?

Krys: yes, filling. The outside is a puff pastry petit chou which they fill to order with different flavors. The web site lists a bunch of flavors, but when I went in NY, it was vanilla, chocolate and flavor of the day (green tea, I believe).

Rita: as you see, I've done my homework, I'm ready for them to open.

BEARD PAPA will be celebrating its GRAND OPENING in
San Francisco, CA on May 12, 2006. Their fresh and natural cream puffs will be served at 99 Yerba Buena
Lane on the corner of Mission St. between 3rd and 4th
Street. We look forward to seeing you there!

You can get a beard papa puff in the Bloomies Center already!!!
