When I was about 16, I stood in line for three hours in the pouring rain outside the Opera House to try and snag some SRO tickets to see "Misha," who I was head-over-heels-in love with, perform with the American Ballet Theater. When they opened the box office, all the people behind me--I was near the middle of the line--just kind of swarmed into the front of the line, and there was no security around to stop them. Such incredible rudeness from a bunch of ballet fans! I've seen better manners in line for a punk rock show. Here's the kicker, though. When I finally got to the box office window, the guy IN FRONT OF ME got the last ticket.
Obviously, I was heartbroken, and am stil harboring resentment to this day. I never did get to see him perform in person, and now, he kind of scares me.
Monday nights are the Crab-o-Rama nights at Andrew Jaeger's House of Seafood and Jazz (formerly the Condor) in North Beach.
For $20 (plus tax and tip, of course), you can enjoy a 5 course crabby Prix Fixe while sitting in the same spot Carol Doda sparked, according to Mr. SF, a "booby craze" by becoming the first topless performer in SF.
And because it's Monday and not the weekend, chances are you will avoid most of the drunken louts, that is unless you yourself are one and then I say, hey buddy, do your thang!
k.
The best film playing in town that night is almost certainly Bertolucci's the Conformist, which deserves its comparisons to Citizen Kane and The Godfather but has never been released on DVD or even decent VHS. Plays the Balboa all week.
But in case you're seeing that some other day, here's some recommended Monday-exclusive screenings:
Kekexili: Mountain Patrol (Tibetian poaching thriller) at the Kabuki's Asian American Film Festival
Magnificent Obsession (Insane 1954 Sirk melodrama) at the Castro
The Big Lebowski (you know what this is) at the Edinburgh Castle film night
