Beyond Linkin Park
Every Asian-American music listener has that list of Asian-American stars they whip out at a moment's notice: Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park, the half-Japanese violinist (of course he's a violinist) from Yellowcard, Karen O, Jay-Z, and Amerie .... but how nice to have the option to find others. The Asian American Film Festival's Directions In Sound show tomorrow night features four local Asian-American indie rock bands to get to know: From Monuments to Masses (post-punk), Whysall Lane (intricately crafted), Love Like Fire (dreamy Britpop), and solo singer Mike Park (no description, but probably singer-songwritery, you know?).
The show starts at 9 (doors at 8) at Cafe Du Nord tomorrow night. Tickets $10 -- but act fast, the show's selling out.

Mike Park was in Skankin' Pickle and is the Asian Man behind Asian Man Records.
Mike Park is such an asset to indie rock! His music is poignant, complex and gorgeous. His label, Asian Man Records (http://www.asianmanrecords.com/), showcases under-exposed artists from up and down the Coast, as well as acts like the Polysics, Alkaline Trio, The Chinkees, Screeching Weasels, Lawrence Arms, Adam and His Package etc. He runs Asian Man Records out of his parent's garage, and keeps the label small, prices low and the anti-racism fight alive!
i'm all for political music, but too many korea-fans over there on ohmycrapmusic smokin the crack...unless i just hate post-punk whatever. case in point - the mysterious 'k' who talks three duplicate comments in a row about 'His music is poignant' with regards to Mike Park. I don't know anything about Mike Park, and after the overhype of Monument to Masses, I'm not about to waste any more of my time. Freaks. go listen to some decent music.
I didn't want to presume it was the same Mike Park -- you know, like The Grace Lee Project! Glad to hear it.
(and to be fair, commenter Peter, we have some weird glitch in our software where comments sometimes get double or triple-posted, so don't hold that against local Asian-American indie pop.)
Peter,
Would you like to listen to Mike Park's music before judging my musical aptitude?
And yes, the triple post was due to a glitch.
kitty, not so mysterious.
