Your Commute: On The Blotter

bart_shooting_031506_lg.jpgLots of death and transit events to report today: Did you hear the helicopters whirring overhead in the Mission last night? The SFPD came in full force after reports of a serious shooting on Mission between 15th and 16th, right by the BART station, at about 10:30 last night. Shots were fired towards the station and four people were injured. Two are expected to live, one is fighting serious injuries, and one victim has died. The helicopter sounds stopped right as the rain started coming down again. Guess there went all the forensic evidence.

A 90-year-old man was killed at Stockton and Jackson by one of those tourist motorized streetcars yesterday afternoon too. The man, who walked with a cane, was still in the crosswalk as the light on Jackson turned green. As the trolley took off down Jackson, it hit the man and pinned him under the front wheel. The driver claims he didn't see the man, and the four people on the trolley were uninjured. Oh, this is so poignant: "The cable car sat empty, with only the victim’s shoes, cane and a bag of apples on its steps."

Phew. In something a little more schadenfreude-y, a guy speeding down 25th Avenue in Oakland took a sharp left turn on 20th Street and -- boom! -- rear-ended a fire engine answering an alarm. The accident thrust the fire truck down the length of the block, taking out six cars as it went. The speeding driver was taken to the hospital with non-critical injuries to his legs, and all the firefighters are okay. And you don't even need to worry about the fire -- turns out kids had pulled the alarms in an apartment building as a prank.

What sorts of shootings are non-serious?

You know, I'm not really sure -- but I live in the Mission and most of the gunshots I hear don't require them to call in helicopters and rope off streets. So I figure this one's gotta be more "serious" than the usual run of the mill crime around the area.

I was walking down 16th when I heard the shots (ironically, I had just parted ways with my friend Eric, who said "you don't want to walk that way! It's dangerous!"). By the time I got to Mission there were a shitload emergency vehicles, flares, police tape, and some omnious looking puddles.

I was on the phone with Tim, and I said to him "oh, shit, it looks like someone got shot" and I think he thought I was joking. Next time Eric tells me not to do something, I am listening to him.

Uh, that would be East 20th St. 20th St. and 25th Ave. do not intersect. As far as distances between the two thoroughfares go, think Mission vs. Sunset.
