SFist Whines & Dines: The 540 Club

What is the Bark and Whine Ball hiding? We had hoped to report this week on the annual black tie extravaganza for the San Francisco SPCA, but SFist’s request for media credentials were denied. We had hoped to tell you the what celebrity dogs are wearing this season, who the hot makers of gourmet dog treats that look better than human desserts are and who is sniffing who’s butt but we weren’t invited so those important questions will remain unanswered.
So what is this ‘pet-friendly’ group hiding from the dog blogging community? Having seen photos of earlier Bark and Whine Balls, we can only assume it is the unbridled humiliation of dogs in costumes - pink costumes, sparkly costumes, tutu costumes, feathery costumes – just plain cruel costumes. A good laugh is had by all at the expense of the poor canines dressed up to look like fools. We thought it was called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
Even without an invite to the big ball, we did manage to get dressed up in our Mardi Gras beads and hit the town this week. How we earned the beads, well, we can only report that it may or may not have involved the removed of a collar on one or more occasions.
Anywho, we celebrated Fat Tuesday at our favorite dog friendly bar in the Inner Richmond – The 540 Club on Clement. Okay, maybe it’s the only dog friendly bar in the Inner Richmond, but this place still rocks.
The 540 Club has plenty of room to roam around and the humans and other dogs were very friendly. The place is a little sparse on food options but there are free treats awaiting behind the bar – just ask the bartender and she will hook you up with an assortment of rainbow colored mini bones. We didn’t see any water dishes around but one canine reported getting a taste of scotch.
You enter the 540 Club by passing through the smokin’ porch in the front – always a nice touch to have an outdoor area. And they have the coolest long black vinyl couch along one wall that was very comfy. People kept coming by as we relaxed on the couch to rub our belly and hand feed us treats. A solid 3 St. Bernards.
