We Read The Weeklies

metro31.jpgLast week's winner, the San Jose Metro: Gary Singh does his best Travis Bickel to help out a friend getting blackmailed for her journal. Cover article: Blogs! Will they change politics? (no.) An experimental Canadian thriller, a documentary about Israel and Palestine: it's Cinequest time. Greek food in Santa Clara -- we were taken by the title, "Your Pal Is Athena." And BET Uncut -- the educational TV program! ("Once an acoustic guitar gets to strumming, a half-naked multicultural boat party will break out." So true!)

The Guardian: A SFist-Rantsworthy letter about how gross it is when people clip their fingernails on BART. Remember the guy shot last week at 1015 Folsom? Polk Award winner AC Thompson reveals that the victim was the hit man he wrote about two months ago in an article about the ineptitude of the SFPD! Whoa! Next, Thompson covers the slumlike conditions in Oakdale public housing. We hope no one in this article is killed two months from now too. The Japantown mall sale situation. Cover: E-40 and the Bay Area hyphy. (Hey, off topic, but check out MTV's hyphy special this Sunday!). L.E. Leone on her ex-wife. Dude, we are so psyched for the Michel Gondry Dave Chappelle's Block Party movie! So! Psyched! And the sex columnist, on the meaning of the term "Tony Danza" (click to find out!)

The Village Voice LLC papers (the SF Weekly and the East Bay Express) after the jump, plus the pick of the week. We're giving it to you Tony Danza style!

The SF Weekly: Are you an apologist for dog poop recycling? ("I'm no scientist, but I could have told you years ago that farts have the power to light up a room.") Do those creepy-sexy ads advocating HIV prevention work? Maybe. Cover article: some 60s band (who apparently started the whole San Francisco sound thing.) Dave Chappelle's Block Party!! Meredith on the KQED show Check Please and the reviewing process, which is actually kind of interesting. And SFist Eve's horoscope: don't get a vanity license plate this week!

And the EBX: Dream comic: girl goes to prom with a groping Gandhi. Is Nancy Nadel putting up nasty posters about de la Fuente's son's pending trial on rape charges? Safeway's getting all fancy! Cover article: Don Perata's boondoggle road construction on the Island of Alameda. Jonathan Kaufman on eating dinner at brunch places. Rob Harvilla brings it again -- we must see this "Punky Chips Ahoy!" commercial he discusses! We must!! ....and the Bay Area Rap Scene Awards are this Saturday in Danville's 680 Lounge. Danville?

And the Weekly of the Week: Aw come on, the Village Voice Media contingent isn't even trying anymore! AC Thompson takes it for the Guardian. But two jiggles of the thong-encased backside to Todd Inoue's BET Uncut article in the Metro, for this sentence alone: "Labtekwon appreciates women of all body types and fitness levels."
