The South Bay {Hearts} You

Confession time: It's not that we hate Valentine's Day exactly, but... well, let's just say we're actually glad we're moving on the 14th.

But if you're looking for smoochy, cuddly things to do down in the south bay (and really, who isn't?) we have some ideas for you. Of course, they're ideas from our bitter, black hearts but whatever - they're at least less cliche than a red rose and some overpriced dinner.

If you don't want to stay up too late on Tuesday, but still want to get that fluttery heart feeling, Kepler's is hosting Al Jacobs, reading love letters tomorrow Friday, February 10th at 8pm.

The program includes the correspondence of Napoleon to Josephine, Harry to Bess Truman, Robert to Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and postcards from Brokeback Mountain.

Brokeback Mountain. You can't get away from it. Don't even try.

If that's not enough lovey talk for you, the Poetry Center of San Jose hosts a poetry reading by Nils Peterson on the 14th.

Also on Valentine's Day itself, you can take your lover-nerd to the Computer History Museum (so tech-y, so romantic) for a panel discussion on "Social Computing: From Message Boards to Blogs & Beyond".

Bring your honey, bring a friend or come solo to the Computer History Museum on Valentine's Day. Join Usenet guru Erik Fair, virtual worlds pioneer and Yahoo! Community Strategist Randy Farmer, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman, and Six Apart co-founder Mena Trott, together with top Wall Street Journal columnist Kara Swisher, to hear fascinating personal stories and perspectives about social computing: yesterday, today and tomorrow. Valentine's Day surprises will abound.

The talk begins at 7pm but if you're single perhaps you can meet that special someone (or perform a cheap V-Day pickup for getting your geek freak on) at the member reception which starts at 6pm.

La Bohème is on at Opera San Jose which is a pretty nice and fancy thing to do but if you're really in love you do things like this, right? (We kid! La Bohème is actually a kickass opera and very watchable for those of you who'll only go on a special occasion). Tickets aren't cheap, but you're in love, what do you care?
