Review: Pirates of the Great Salt Lake

The problems of modernism have created a longing deep within people’s souls: to be pirates. Sometimes this desire drives them to take up the pirate life in unusual (though not exotic) locals and thus "Pirates of the Great Salt Lake" begins. Swashbuckling, treasure, and pawnshops populate this SF Indie Fest offering. Almost as impressive as lines blaming the status of contemporary pirates on “that damn Johnny Depp” is the fact that the entire film from conception to premier was completed in six months. There are a ton of awesome pirate jokes and gags in this film—and none of the ones you’d expect. Giving a fresh face to pirate humor is something impressive that SFist can definitely get behind. Despite how much we laughed, the story overall has both a lot of sad parts, and as the audience pointed out tons of different morals that you can construe. Our favorite: You be you, pirate or not. Ahhhhhhhh!

Pirates airs again at Women's Building on 2/05 at 4:30
