This week we're two-timing (double teaming? Why does everything sound so dirty?) an online reserve and a book from one of our fine local independent bookstores. See our two picks after the jump, but first see what other, less fickle Fisters have on their nightstands:
Wearing his Trimethyldioxypurist hat (and inspired by his recent conversation with the Shot's Greg Sherwin), SFist Jer is furthering his coffee education with Corby Kummer's excellent and informative The Joy of Coffee: The Essential Guide to Buying, Brewing and Enjoying. It's basically an overview of the history, business, and logistics of coffee . . .it even outlines best practices for brewing in a variety of ways and explains the ghastly, insidious process behind "decaf."
SFist Eve wants to have it both ways (again with the dirty!). She's reading Don't Try This At Home, which is a hilarious and nerve-wracking collection of essays by some of the world's best-known chefs. All the essays detail disasterous and improfessional moments from the kitchen (she loves that kind of dirt). Her favorite so far has been Jimmy Bradley's tale of an insane restaurant staff drinking game ("every time you are to perform anything related to your job, do a shot"), which made her drunk just by reading it.
Proving his worth as a charter member of the SFist gentleman's auxiliary, Eve's s.o. presented her with The Zombie Survival Guide this Christmas, and she couldn't be happier. Approaching the zombie issue as though it's a genuine and serious phenomenon, it goes through everything you need to do to protect yourself from and survive the eventual zombie invasion. If she still manages to get infected after reading this book, it'll be her own damn fault.
