SFisting: Shake that Fruitcake, Don't Break It

The holiday parties and dinners are adding up, but we can't let that slow us down, even if we're, uh, having an interesting time fitting into our jeans. But here at SFist, we cannot allow carb counting, calorie obsession or shallow breathing in our 501s prevent us from all the cocktails the holiday has to spare, no sir. Which is why we're thanking our lucky stars, bombshells and cherry-bomb pinup idols for Bombshell Betty and her Burlesquercise classes.

Feeling a bit nervous about squeezing into that rubber catsuit for any City Hall Getty-esque holiday fund-raising affairs we're sure to be invited to this weekend, we're so ready for a little bump and grind workout. One of our favorite local burlesque performers, Bombshell Betty is offering two drop-in Burlesquercise classes tonight, "Introduction to Burlesque Dance" at 7pm and her brand-new "Burlesque Toning and Conditioning" ($20 for one, $30 for both). Here we hope to learn how to strut and shimmy our fruitcake-laden hips, for sure, but also to learn a few new moves to bust out and knock that bitch Arianna off the dance floor. Or at least look a bit cooler when we're wasted, crying, and mewling "Ohmigawd this is MY SONG!" at the company holiday party.

We know Betty can teach us how to bring it, old-skool style (like, skool in the 1950s). Plus, we're also looking forward to next year, when we'll be taking her two day Pinup Modeling Workshops, including "Pinup Posing And Retro Hairstyling Workshop" and Professional Makeup Session And Photo Shoot" -- from which we walk away with a disk of photos for our portfolio, professional makeup and hair lessons and sexy poses for our new internet careers. Which we'll surely need after we embarrass ourselves through the holidays.

Class info: Tonight Wednesday December 21, "Introduction to Burlesque Dance" at 7pm and "Burlesque Toning and Conditioning" at 8:30 ($20 for one, $30 for both, 3435 Cesar Chavez @ Mission, drop-ins welcome). Two day Pinup Modeling Workshops: "Pinup Posing And Retro Hairstyling Workshop" Saturday, January 7 at 1pm; Professional Makeup Session And Photo Shoot" Saturday, January 14 12pm ($245 for both workshops, same location, pre-registration required).

Although Betty is definitely a pro at Burlesque and offers a fun and interesting course be forewarned that she does not operate under normal business ethics.

She'll not give refunds, even partial, under any circumstance nor will she work with you on any compromise. Why? She's not even operating as a legal business entity or paying taxes like the rest of us in either SF or Oakland. (although I think she's finally registered in SF) I have a small claims lawsuit pending against her because she said she would send me a gift certificate so I could redeem some of my money then didn't deliver. Watch out.

Regarding Nancy Girouard's comment: My business ethics are sterling and this slander (as well as your lawsuit) is frivolous and misguided. My terms and policies are very clear on my website and are standard policies within the industry. I've spent many hours with my business advisor and lawyer developing those policies, and I stand by them. I have had overwhelming support from my students regarding this case, and I think that says it all. If you'd like to find out what all the fuss is about, have a look at htt://www.bombshellbetty.net and decide for yourself. Shake a tail feather!

I have experience with teaching dance and from what I can tell by the information on the website their refund policy is pretty standard. personally, I've never offered a refund for cancellations unless there was enough time to fill the empty slot otherwise it's too risky, it's like money out of my own pocket. I wonder what that woman meant by "does not operate under normal business ethics" everything on the website looks very professional.

Business ethics? She isn't even registed to legally do business in either Oakland or San Francisco.
Frivolous? This case was controversial enough that we both appeared on the Judge Mathis show where he ruled in my favor. Justice was served.
