SFist Reads

We're drooling after seeing what our fellow 'Fisters are reading this week. We have to admit that food-related are the only books we prefer to buy as opposed to borrow, maybe because we promise ourselves that we will get around to making the mentioned dishes. Not that we ever do.

SFist Derrick is reading through the latest issue of The Art of Eating, which always jumps to the head of the reading queue when it appears in his mailbox. Though Ed Behr's article on Gruyere de Comte is typically in-depth and evocative, Derrick is particularly intrigued by Rowan Jacobsen's article on locally grown tropical fruits in Homestead, FL. It's given him a new perspective on these plants, though he doesn't imagine he'll find any local mango farmers for In The Kitchen.

SFist Cheshire is reading Comfort Me with Apples, the second memoir from celebrated restaurant critic and food writer Ruth Reichl. He didn't read the first one, Tender at the Bone, but Apples was passed along to him by coworkers, and hell, he's been hearing forever how great Reichl is, and, well, high expectations are deadly. He was surprised to find that he actually doesn't like her writing, which might have overcome a pretty disturbing story. Fortunately, once she gets past the excruciating (and excruciatingly drawn-out) section in which she details an extramarital affair with her food editor, she moves on to more interesting stories, but Cheshire hasn't been too enthusiastic to continue. He'll probably finish it, though. He doesn't hate the writing -- it's just that after the awesome, simple but muscular prose of Annie Proulx, Reichl's is just simplistic. He has, however, enjoyed Reichl's Berkeley memories. That's something, at least.
