We all know someone who's been affected by a medical problem of some kind, but it's a bit trickier giving a gift related to that interest than some of the others we've profiled. These issues tend to be much more personal and even the most philanthropic-minded friend might not want to be reminded of it during the holiday season. Still, there are some worthwhile charities you can consider and it's easy to find the national organization for most others and donate through them.
The San Francisco AIDS Foundation offers a marketplace/storefront from which you can bounce around to different merchants who'll sell you something and donate part of the proceeds to the Foundation. You can choose by store type and the resulting layout makes it easy to see which stores give the biggest amount to maximize bang for your holiday giving buck.
The Pink Ribbon Shop, in support of breast cancer research, is still open for business and they have ornaments for the holidays. If you order today and spend more than $75, you can get free 3-day shipping and actually get your purchase just in time for Christmas. We could just overdose on the pink!
Are you waiting until the very last minute and figure you'll just send flowers? Well, you can help the National Kidney Foundation in the process of being a lazy, last-minute, flower-giver! Use Our Gift and 10% of the price of the flowers is donated to them.
If all has failed and you're completely at a loss, you can even give a gift certificate for charity. JustGive.org has a charity gift certificate program. They also have a supercool gift basket set-up where they package donations to a bunch of charities all within one area of interest. No excuses allowed!
Finally, we want to make a special retroactive mention of an animal charity sent to us from reader Juliet - The International Fund for Animal Welfare. They have their own animal gift site where you can adopt a cool animal (brown bears yay!) or, our favorite idea, donate to help with pet care for pets in need through their CLAW program.
