SFist Reads

Oh man we're psyched about the holiday weekend, which begins for us in about 10 minutes! We have a few online reserves to pick up (can you believe that we haven't read the new Harry Potter yet?), and some recently purchased (from our fine local independent bookstores, of course) books beckon. How about you? Any plans to read over the holidays? Let us know in the comments!
SFist Jer is back to reading his favorite magazine (aside from Cricket) -- the good ol' Atlantic Monthly. Perhaps he's neglected to mention this before, but one of his favorite aspects of the Atlantic is the letters section, particularly because the authors of the articles being commented on respond to the readers. This is an Iraq-centric issue--cover story "Why Iraq Has No Army." A piece Jer found particularly thought-provoking was a sort of Q&A article by Nir Rosen called "If America Left Iraq."
SFist Eve just finished Dearly Devoted Dexter. She was shocked to see that it had been over a year since we read its prequel (have we been doing this that long? Really?), Darkly Dreaming Dexter. The continuing adventures of a mentally ill sociopathic killer who chooses to use his powers for good as opposed to evil (Spike, much?), Devoted seems much slimmer and less guignol than the previous novel,. That said, we as readers gain more insight into how we might imagine it is to be a monster masquerading as a man. It's not for everyone, but it sure works for us.
