When The Lights Go Down In The City

Listen up! Two of our favorite indie rock bands are coming to town this week. "Indie" as in they're actually on independent labels ("indie" is not a genre); and "rock" as in crunchy guitars, dirty reverb and gratifyingly dour lyrics. Rock as in, we salute you. Those bands are Criteria and The Constantines, playing at Great American Music Hall on Sunday and Tuesday, respectively. Fire up your devil horns.

Criteria
Enter to win a copy of Criteria's new CD when we break, out now on Saddle Creek Records. Stream when we break in its entirety here. (Contest ends 10/19).

Constantines
Enter to win two spots on The Constantines' guest list for their show on Wednesday the 19th at Great American plus a free copy of their new CD Tournament of Hearts. (Contest ends 10/17).

Tonight Popscene welcomes guest DJ Andy Rourke of The Smiths and a live performance by The Glass. 12 Galaxies has the Herms and Mark Mallman, holder of the world record for "longest rock song ever written". Hopefully he won't play that song tonight. Wolf Eyes, not to be confused with Wolf Parade or Bright Eyes, is at Bottom of the Hill. Did you get tickets to the "secret" Green Day show at the Warfield? If so, tell us about the show in the comments.

DeerhoofOn Friday, Dios (Malos) celebrates their brand new self-titled CD at Great American with Swords, Minipop and Built Like Alaska. At the Warfield, get rocked Geddy Lee-style by Coheed and Cambria and Blood Brothers. Linda Perry was a one-hit wonder until Pink unearthed her and made her the next Max Martin. She sings song from her self-indulgent new solo record In Flight at Slim's. Oakland's From Monument to Masses waxes political at Bottom of the Hill. On Saturday, Deerhoof celebrates their CD release at Great American with Octis and The Whysp. Their new record The Runners Four came out Tuesday on Kill Rock Stars.

On Sunday, join us to see Criteria at Great American, performing with Minus the Bear and Headphones.

On Tuesday, Architecture in Helsinki tries to fit all eight members on Amoeba's stage for a free show in support of their CD In Case We Die. They play again later that night at Slim's with Dr. Dog. At the Warfield, Gang of Four returns to SF with Morningwood and Men, Women & Children. At the Fillmore, Turbonegro brings the rock with The International Noise Conspiracy and Juliette and The Licks. We'll be at Great American to see The Constantines (because we are indeed in love with them) with co-headliner The Hold Steady. Join our friend David Dondero in raising some money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina at Bottom of the Hill. Download Dondero's song "I've Seen The Love" from his forthcoming record here.

On Wednesday, Switchfoot and our beloved Eisley deliver delightfully inoffensive pop rock at the Grand Ballroom. If you like music that's beautiful and quiet, be at the Warfield for Iron and Wine with Calexico. At Bottom of the Hill, Broken Spindles (featuring Joel Peterson of The Faint) plays songs from the record inside/absent which you can stream in its entirety here.
