We Read The Weeklies

Just a little word from your sponsor before we kick into last week's winner: this correspondent's taking a little time off from the column -- it's not you, it's us -- and SFist Eve has generously volunteered to cover the column for a few weeks. We'll be back soon, though, we promise! (Or rather, more specifically, we promised SFist Eve we would.)

Okay, where were we? Oh yes, the Guardian. It's the endorsement issue! Get your November ballot cheat sheet here! (Never fear, SFist will do one too, if we get around to it.) Featuring: the world's most tepid endorsement in the assessor's race! (Thanks to Left in SF for pointing this out.) In other news, an article about Friend of SFist H. Brown's one-blogger campaign for reopening the bathrooms in the public park, and a picture of a protest outside TIC lawyer Andrew Zacks' office. Hey, that's right by our Peets' Coffee! The sex columnist is forced to explain the sex subculture of people obsessed with Conan the Barbarian. (Maybe the SchwarzenWatcher can get behind that one?) Local band Deerhoof. And two pictures previously featured on the 'Fist, Edward Burtynsky and Dr. Atomic.

Next up, the Metro: Legal drug plants! Landlord evicts all those cool shops in the middle of downtown San Jose -- apparently tacos will attract SJSU student riffraff. The Mercury News refuses to run an article about a man campaigning against "penal enlargement" (you know, prisons) with a mildly-risque cartoon illustration. Cover article: facilitating Chinese internet censorship with Cisco routers. Just like the SJ City Hall, only substitute the word "ethical shenanigans for "Chinese internet censorship." Korean food in the S. Bay. Gwen Stefani and other folks who broke from their bands in an attempt to make it big. How's that working out for ya, Trey Anastacio? And Straight Dope: who ya got, Shakespeare or Tom Clancy?

Get your New Times Media barrage with the SF Weekly and the EBX after the jump. Plus, this correspondent's very last pick of the week! Who knows what SFist Eve's gonna like starting next week?

The SF Weekly: Everyone say hi to the new editor, Tom Walsh! (Hi, Tom.) Matt Smith brings both barrels blazing about illogical arguments at City Hall. (What? You don't say!) Cover article: animation company Wild Brain. Did you know R.U. Sirius's real name is Ken Goffman? Meredith Brody starts this week's ode to beef with the phrase "There are few things I like to do more at table than pick up a meaty bone and gnaw on it." Oh, dear Lord. Exotic Erotic pullout! Claiming that our beloved SFist Violet "looks great covered in chocolate syrup!" We need to have better staff parties, clearly. And Savage Love: things your guests do in your bathroom (warning: involves your toothbrush).

And the East Bay Express: Huh, Guardian reporter A.C. Thompson wrote a letter about how he used to be a roadie for the band Avail. How'd he go from Lookout roadie to gritty city reporting? Prank personals on Craigslist. Ron Dellums, is he all that? Maybe this'll be the year for the Golden State Warriors! Cover article: juggling transgender life as a male computer programmer by day and a hot babe singing for the band Lipstick Conspiracy at night. (We learned a new phrase! "128-er," which refers to a person who dresses as a woman every hour of the week except for the 40 hours he is at work.) I Like Eating goes to a place in San Leandro where they serve garlic crab, ribs, and fried chicken. Yay! High rents in SF have totally improved the Oakland music scene. And Rob Harvilla's stop by the Battle of the Bands at 12 Galaxies, plus his hot-five of last week. (We totally agree. That picture of the snake that exploded after eating the alligator was messed. Messed!)

Pick of the week: As good civic citizens, we're duty-bound to say the endorsements issue. Fight Arnold's special election! We'll see you guys in a few weeks -- be nice for SFist Eve.

Thank you, Rita. I sincerely hope I can carry on your rich tradition of dissing Brody, making a somewhat arbitrary pick of the week, and completely ignoring The Wave.
