Our concert picks for the week of 9/15 - 9/21.
A few weeks ago we saw a hilarious movie called "The Baxter" that was written, directed and stars Stella's Michael Showalter. As he's done with his past work, he had his friend Craig Wedren (formerly of Shudder To Think) create the soundtrack, which features Craig's music alongside the likes of Angela McClusky and Peter Salett. To celebrate the film's release, we're giving away a Baxter prize pack with a T-shirt and soundtrack. Watch the trailer, go see the film, and enter to win. (Contest ends 9/21)
Northern English post-punkers Maximo Park kick off the Thursday night madness with a free instore at Amoeba. See them again later that night when they open for The Bravery at Fillmore. Keep it going late into the night at Popscene's after party for those two bands plus Interpol, who will hopefully show up after their stadium show in San Jose. If you'd like to do some local damage to your ear drums, Gris Gris is at 12 Galaxies.
Soak up some local hip hop on Friday at the Fillmore when Zion I with The Team, Crown City Rockers, and Mistah Fab perform. Bottom of the Hill hosts a CD release show for Scarling with Boom Bip and Madelia also on the bill. 12 Galaxies has great music all night with Film School, Boyskout and Minipop.
Saturday night offers a few too many choices, but your best bet is to see the lovely Ms. Feist at the Great American. If you can't get tickets to Feist, Jackpot makes you the good kind of sad at Cafe Du Nord and the Dead Hensons pack the Hemlock's back room. Mike Watt, Stephen Perkins, Nels Cline, and Willie Waldman play as Banyan at 12 Galaxies. Popscene brings the Modfather Paul Weller with our good friend Ian Moore opening.
If you have tickets to see The Arcade Fire with Wolf Parade at the Warfield on Sunday, consider yourself lucky.

On Tuesday, Antony and the Johnsons bring their tragic, delicate beauty to the Palace of Fine Arts with gorgeously kooky openers CocoRosie. If you have a taste for the otherworldly and transcendent, this show is a must-see. Also on Tuesday, Echo de Pensees Sound Series presents live performances by multimedia musician Scott Arford and computer music pioneer John Bischoff at PLAySPACE Gallery. At Great American, VH1 presents Aqualung, The Perishers and Tracy Bonham. The Black Keys are at the Fillmore, and Thistle returns to Red Devil Lounge. Her Space Holiday headlines Bottom of the Hill with August Bodies and Midnight Laserbeam.
On Wednesday, Bloc Party returns to the Warfield with dark & dirty openers The Kills. Madness presents The Dangermen Sessions at Bimbo's, and Sean Hayes and Etienne de Rocher bring it down a notch at Rickshaw Stop. The Waco Brothers celebrate the release of their new CD Freedom and Weep with a performance at Bottom of the Hill. Other performers include Sally Timms, Paul Burch, Jon Langford (solo) and Dollar Store, making the evening a Bloodshot Records revue. Download "Nothing At All" from Freedom and Weep and try to stay sober.
