We Read The Weeklies

Before we get into it -- ding ding ding! Envision a scantily-clad lady with a placard reading Round Three! Alt-weekly fight! If this were a schoolyard, we'd all be surrounding the SFBG and the Weekly in a circle. The Weekly lunges! And the SFBG throws a punch back! Oooooh! (Online only -- and geez Louise, the Weekly's essay is loooooong. We got a cramp in our mouse finger scrolling down.)

Okay, onto the actual weeklies. Last week's winner (who's featuring last week's cover on its website), the Guardian. Dude, we are so not prepared for a Katrina-type disaster. Cover article: nuclear power is bad. Hats! If the restaurant Maverick were in your neighborhood, you'd be a lucky person. People complain about their, um, endowments. And oh yeah, we threw out some shiny insert about food.

The Weekly: Matt Smith in rare form, on various humiliations visited on the white race by SF last week. The Chron's Burning Man coverage is only the beginning of the Smith attack! The Infiltrator tries to get his cat cloned. Tommy Craggs on the new A's stadium (lots of diagrams). Meredith Brody's father reminisces about his dinner with Kinsey (no number on the scale revealed.) OK Then on anti FEMA music. Canada, the new Montreal! And the Bouncer goes to the Lone Palm.

After the jump: The East Bay Express, the Metro, and the pick of the week.

The East Bay Express: Slow Wave's dream about Ben Stiller and his panther. Trippy! Bottom Feeder: the inside story on the girl who slashed the old lady's throat in Berkeley. A hand model. Cover article: a totally and completely fascinating story about the implosion at Lookout. A parable for the commercialization of punk in the 90s. (....Screeching Weasel brought Lookout down???) Someone give Rob Harvilla a book deal! (See also Harvilla's list of essential Lookout). The Berkeley Rep after the fire. Songs about weed are getting annoying (That is so true. Also, we love the title of this column: Haters Stand Up. We're standing up!). And Savage Love: don't ask Dan for advice unless you want him to give it, bitch!

The Metro: A Wendy's finger themed cover for the Metro's Best of SV issue! Mmmm, finger. Is white flight resegregating SV schools? And the usual panoply of delights that a Best Of issue brings! The place to be seen? Santana Row. For the second time this week, SFist did not win best local blog, alas (the honors went to unrulyrus.com). But -- come on, guys! Best furniture store: IKEA? We're reading for unusual gems! Back in the regular part of the paper, it's Mexican Independent Comic Book Day on Saturday. And the Straight Dope about meteors from Mars.

Pick of the week: A close call this week between the Weekly and the EBX, but the Harvilla article on the decline and fall of Lookout wins it for the New Times affiliate of the east. And we're going to call the BG-Weekly fight for the Guardian -- mostly because the Guardian's essay is shorter. We have a very short attention span!
