SFist Watches: As the Fall Season Sneaks Up On Us

"SFist Watches TV" returns to the schedule on a new night...er, day, to better help you make sense of what the boob tube has to offer for the week ahead.

While Fall doesn't officially begin until the end of September (and those who live in the City know that it doesn't really start until sometime in November), Fox is getting a jump on the other networks by starting their Fall premieres a lot sooner. Like, tonight soon. The network's much-hyped series Prison Break premieres with a two-hour episode this evening at 8 p.m. We were hoping to get a snazzy preview DVD in our latest issue of "Entertainment Weekly," but weren't that lucky, so we'll just have to base our suggestion on the proverbial word of mouth and, well, other's reviews.

Which, for the most part, seem to be good, despite the inherent silliness of the plot. To wit: A guy robs a bank because he wants to get sent to prison, in order to help his brother--who is on death row for killing the President's brother--escape. Since he designed the prison, he's sure he'll be able to bust them both out. Wentworth Miller, last seen by SFist in a brief role as Satan in the criminally cancelled "Joan of Arcadia," plays Michael, the bank-robbing brother with the prison plans, Dominic Purcell is the bro on death row, and Robin Tunney plays death-row-bro's ex-girlfriend, a lawyer looking into who might have framed him for the murder. (In celebrity-sighting news, SFist once had a drink with Robin Tunney at Doc's Clock when she was in town filming the movie Cherish. And by "had a drink with," we mean we sat next to her at the bar.) We're also happy to see Peter Stomare, the character actor perhaps best-known for his work with the Coen brothers in the cast line-up as well. If the series is a good as early reviews are saying it is, you can expect Fox to cancel it after about a month. Catch it now!

Of local interest, Animal Planet is re-running some episodes of "Animal Cops San Francisco" nightly at 7 p.m. And A&E is re-running the epiosde of "City Confidential" that's all about the Mitchell Brothers' murder. Porn! Drugs! Murder! If your copy of Boogie Nights is worn out, or if you've seen the cable movie starring Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen as Jim and Artie Mitchell and it left you begging for more, then be sure to catch "San Francisco: Betrayal By the Bay" Wednesday at 12 p.m. on A&E.
