SFist Reads: Periodicals
The books we got this week from our online reserve list were dull, dull dull -- we're so happy that we hadn't gone out and bought them from one of our fine local independent bookstores, as we're sometimes tempted to do. We're relying on our thick stack of magazines to get us through the rest of the week, and apparently we're not alone!
SFist Isaac is (eruditely or ironically, you decide) catching up on New Yorkers this week, he MUST find out what Anthony Lane thinks of War of the Worlds. And he is loving their cartoon contest these days. Also the Times crossword was particularly difficult for him this Sunday, but that might just be the booze talking.
While SFist Derrick is reading nothing new, the latest issue of The Art of Eating has arrived and he's eagerly pushing it to the front of his queue. Gerald Asher and Ed Behr are two of his favorite food/wine writers.
SFist Eve is toting around current issues of four -- count 'em -- four magazines at once. What can she say, she's afraid of running out of stuff to read on the N. There's her copy of Architectural Digest, which a colleague gives to her, unopened, every month. To balance the douche bags of AD, she's also carrying around this month's Dwell, to which she is a proud and loyal subscriber. There's also Vogue, with a completely defanged Madonna on the cover, and W, the size of which makes it a real hassle to read on the train -- could it be that their target reader is not a rider of public transportation? Looking back on this list Eve feels like she should be ashamed of...something (but that might be the Catholic talking), but she refuses to do so (angry Jew speaks up), because she loves magazines and obviously doesn't care who knows it.
How about you? When your books run out, what glossy (or non-glossy) publications do you turn to? Let us know in the comments!
