SFist Watches: Movies This Weekend

We hate to sound like a broken record, but if we didn't already feel like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory looked kinda ass, Mick LaSalle's glowing review sealed it for us. We don't really care if they remake every single movie made since 1971, we still won't be sobbing "you raped my childhood" or anything, we promise. But when you have Johnny Depp apparently playing Anna Wintour instead of Willy Wonka, you can't expect us to approve. Well, good to see that if Meryl Streep pulls out of The Devil Wears Prada there are other casting options. We're not going to see Charlie, but would love to hear about it if you did in the comments.
We're excited to see that this year's Animation Show is back at the Red Vic. It's playing all weekend, with short animated films from Bill Plympton and Don Hertzfeldt, among others.
We wish it was more practical to get out to the Parkway, as we felt serious East Bay envy when we saw this weekend's lineup. Crash, Land of the Dead, Sin City, and Rize are all showing -- how great is that lineup? And there's beer!
And now it all comes full-circle as we express our wish that we had a Potrero Walk-In Movie to recommend to y'all, after reading SFist Jackson's description of the show he went to this week, the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory:
After stopping by the Safeway for beer, bread and cheese, we hopped on the 22 for a quick ride to Rhode Island and a not-so quick assault on Potrero Hill up to 18th street (for the love of God, Google, add topography to your map tool). The 'theater' was a recently mowed vacant lot at the corner. The view looking east towards the Bay was spectacular, and by the time the sun went down there must have been fifty or more people on hand for the movie. We were smart enough to bring our goosedown winter coat with us -- others brought blankets or sleeping bags. The smartest folks also brought folding chairs. There was a popcorn machine, and in honor of the movie, Wonka-brand candy like Nerds and Lik-em-ade. The DVD was played through a digital projector, with the side of the adjacent house as the screen. Our only suggestions? Adjust the projector's color to compensate for the green house (Add a little red, less blue and turn down the green), and don't put the speaker on its side -- it was very hard to hear sitting over on the side of the lot (horn tweeters are designed to broadcast sound horizontally).
Well, movie fans, that's all we have for this week. Don't forget to enter our contest to win passes to Murderball, and when you're done with that tell us what you're going to see this weekend in the comments!

A little local trivia about the empty lot the Walk-In Movies play in...(I've got family that lives a block away--and one that used to live right across the street) a dead body wrapped in plastic was found there a few years ago! I can't remember the full story, but I think it turned out to be a tourist that had been mugged for his wallet or something. Creepy!
Follow-up: It's been pointed out to me that AC #15 stops running at 10:30pm on the weekends, so City dwellers can't catch a nighttime show without taxi-ing back to BART. Damn you, AC Transit!
Dude, dead body? Awesome!
Oh, and, it sounds like next week's Walk-in Movies will begin with a barbecue!
