When The Lights Go Down In The City

Our concert picks for the week of 7/7-7/13.

Dear readers, we're just itching to give away some free stuff. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson have a new comedy coming out called Wedding Crashers. You might have seen the trailer already, but you can star in the trailer here. (We're not kidding -- upload your photo and watch!) We've got an indie-tastic Wedding Crashers soundtrack to give away, including songs from Bloc Party, Flaming Lips, Spoon, Death Cab and others, as well as a poster, football, plastic shooter and t-shirt. Our contest-o-tron will pick a winner on July 15th which, hey, just happens to be the opening day of Wedding Crashers. Enter now!

Tonight the biennial Pop Crush Festival kicks off its three-night run at Rickshaw Stop with Human Television and Bunnygrunt. You could camp out at Rickshaw Stop all weekend to get your indie pop fill. Dan Bern starts a three week residency at 12 Galaxies and Zion I holds it down at the Independent.

EstheroOn Friday, Pop Crush and Rickshaw have The Orange Peels, My Favorite, Voxtrot and more. Afri Rampo continues their sonic assault on our city at the Hemlock. KFOG presents the first of two nights at the Independent featuring The Waifs and Ben Weaver. Straight outta Sweden, Dungen descends upon Bottom of the Hill with their dark folk psychedelia. Faun Fables and The Lonelyhearts open. We'll be at the Fillmore to see the sultry, sassy, soulful Esthero make a triumphant return with her new record Wikked Lil' Grrrls.

Loop!StationStones Throw and Chocolate Industries present Oh No and Diverse on Saturday at Great American. Bottom of the Hill gets deranged with Gravy Train!!! and Brazilian Girls seduce you at The Fillmore. Oakland's Liminal Gallery gives you good reason to cross the bridge to see local vocal-cello duo Loop!Station with Extra Action Marching Band and Battleship! Vocals and cello might sound like a subdued pairing, but one listen to Loop!Station will have you wired. We say they're a band to watch.

Spend a highbrow afternoon on Sunday at Yerba Buena Gardens for a free performance by the Stars of the Merola Opera. Visit the other extreme that night at Slim's to let Corrosion of Conformity and Fu Manchu rock your eardrums off. Or take the middle road and see Birdmonster at 12 Galaxies.

Cinema Drafthouse at the Independent screens Sideways on Monday. The Holy Kiss dishes their doom and gloom at Bottom of the Hill with Lion Fever, who have a new release on Dim Mak. Gogol Bordello is at Slim's on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Built to Spill starts three nights at Slim's, and Penelope Houston plays at 12 Galaxies. The Onion presents a Willie Nelson CD release party at Thee Parkside, and our hard rocking friends in Diamond Nights return to Cafe Du Nord.
