When The Lights Go Down In The City
Our concert picks for the week of 6/16 - 6/22.
We were all excited to tell SFist reader Gaelen that she'd won tickets to see Amusement Parks on Fire at Popscene tonight, until we found out the show has been cancelled because the bass player is ill. We'll send good thoughts to him for a quick recovery (and we'll send Gaelen the APoF CD as a replacement prize). This week still offers up some great concerts, with emphasis on our talented locals and several artists you've heard tons about but haven't seen yet. Go forth and discover something!

Tonight Amoeba presents a free instore by ANTI- Records' Danny Cohen. Tom Waits describes Cohen's sound as "poignant and dog eared music through a tin horn of twisted reckonings and dark secrets." We'll buy that for a dollar (or, well, for free). Electrelane and locals Deerhoof make surreal, dreamy noises at the Great American. Support several local artists at The Makeout Room's "Penny Arcade: A Night of Acoustic Amusement" featuring Loquat, Beulah's Patrick Abernathy, The Junior Panthers and more. Catch some hip international chanteuse action at Cafe Du Nord with Juana Molina and Keren Ann.
On Friday Amoeba Homegrown presents a free instore with the hiphop of Psychokinetics who play later at the Elbo Room. Ex-Brian Jonestown Massacre member Joel Gion plays with his new band The Dilettantes at 12 Galaxies. The Makers shake it at Bottom of the Hill, The Holy Kiss descend upon The Hemlock, and The Court and Spark open for The Go-Betweens at Slim's. The Independent has subdued Americana siren Jesse Sykes and her band The Sweet Hereafter along with the sultry sounds of opener Inara George.

Join SFist contest winner Claire as The Futureheads get their post-punk party started at the Fillmore on Saturday, with openers High Speed Scene and Every Move a Picture. We'll be down at the Grand to see Feist open for Rilo Kiley and New Zealand popsters The Brunettes. Join us at Stern Grove on Sunday morning to put your picnic blanket down early, because Lucinda Williams and John Doe will be bowling us over for free starting at 2pm. Free! That night, Digable Planets headline the DNA Lounge with locals Crown City Rockers and Playing In Fog presents many talented local musicians for Hanging On A Star: A Tribute To Nick Drake at Cafe Du Nord. Bottom of the Hill has Enon and Thunderbirds Are Now, Les Claypool does his thing at the Independent, and our boys in Spoon start a well-deserved two night stint at the Fillmore.
On Tuesday, the Ditty Bops and Blanche coheadline Great American with up-and-comers Youth Group (listen to Youth Group here). Hotel Utah celebrates with a Summer Solstice BBQ and a show by Charlotte Martin. We can't say we were pleased to find out that the Spin Doctors are still around and touring (oh, yes, "Little Miss" can be wrong), but if that's good news to you then you can see them at the Independent. On Wednesday, Cafe Du Nord presents a special performance of Forever Changes in its entirety by Love with Arthur Lee.
