SFist Watches: Movies This Weekend

Fine, we still think you should go see Evil Aliens tonight, but what about tomorrow or Sunday? You'll probably need something to cleanse your palate after the wacky fun gore of Evil Aliens, so we have some higher-minded recomendations for all you smarty-pants kids out there.

SF IndieFest is presenting The Power of Nightmares at the Roxie beginning tonight at 7 p.m. Described on the Roxie site as a "BBC series of documentary films about how fear has come to dominate politics not only in America, but throughout the world, and how much of that fear is based on illusion", Nightmares "show(s) how that fantasy was created, and why, by telling an epic story that starts in America in 1949 and ends in the present day." Kevin Danaher, co-founder of Global Exchange will be doing a special Q&A w/ after the 7:00 show on Saturday, so that might be the night to go.

You might not ever have a Big Mac attack again after seeing McLibel , which is opening tonight at the Lumiere. The story of two British activists and their efforts against McDonald's, several screenings will be followed by Q&As. Tonight after the 7 p.m. show you can hear from founders of Bay Area Vegetarians and vegan author and activist Erik Marcus, on Saturday after the 7 p.m. screening it's SF Vegetarian Society’s Dixie Mahy and Kristen Miles and Carlos Villearreal, Exec. Dir. National Lawyers Guild, and Sunday following the 2:30pm show you can hear from Nancy Mancias of CodePINK with Medea Benjamin and Kevin Danaher of Global Exchange (boy, he gets around).

So, if you want to either be talked out of your next Happy Meal, or just to be reminded of how gosh-darned right you are not to eat fast food in the first place, you know where to go. Additionally, we'll note that all these screenings will be in the wake of a protest at 5 p.m. today at the 600 Van Ness McDonald's, if that's what you're in to. (We personally protest McDonald's by not going there in the first place, but we're notoriously lazy).
